Hi, I’m Glenn Hauman, and I’d like to try to get you to back this. Let me explain why…
In August of ’16, we thought up a plan
if we could get all of the language to scan
to mash up the book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!”
and combine it with themes from that Star Trek show.
We’d demonstrate how they (with new illustrations)
both seek out new life forms and new civilizations
as through endless journeys protagonists barreled…
and so it was written up by David Gerrold
with lovely artwork drawn by Ty Templeton,
they both made a book that could not be outdone!
We were very respectful, not lewd, rude, or crude.
We thought it was wonderful…!
Oh, the uses Seuss sued! There were fights to be picked!
There was art to suppress! Punishments to inflict!
Before the last drawing had seen final touches,
word made its way to the ears (and the clutches)
of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which owns
Seuss trademarks and copyrights, and which bemoans
any artwork that starts to remotely remind
of a Seussian style. Their response was not kind.
But while fighting the lawsuit, some facts became plain:
There are stories from Seuss in the public domain!
That means we can use them, without reprisal
from the estate of Theodor Geisel.
Some are well known (though not in these versions)
while some haven’t been seen since the rights reversions!
And so we decided to print them ourselves!
We’ll fill up a book to put on store shelves
reprinting those tales from his body of work
a half-dozen stories (along with artwork).
We start with “The Zaks” which we thought appealed;
It’s about creatures who simply won’t yield.
Plus a full epilogue on why this book was needed,
giving our side of the case that was pleaded,
why we kept fighting, why we had to stop,
and what caused this book to appear in your shop.
We’ll also do posters of every tale
of which the backers can choose to avail.
As of May 12th, this project has raised $5,100 of their $5,000 goal. This project has 20 days left to raise as much as it can. For a pledge of $10, you will get one poster.
