A Geek’s Guide To Surviving A Convention

Advertisements

Whether you’re staying local with Kami-Con or making the trip to San Diego for Comic-Con, there’s nothing better than going to a convention. And as 2022 draws closer, that means we can don our lanyards once more and hit the convention circuit.

But all these months away from our favorite convention halls may have left some of us a little rusty on how to manage the crowds around the vendor booths. To brush up in preparation for the months ahead, here’s a geek’s guide to surviving a convention.

Make a Game Plan

There are three panels you want to visit, your favorite comic artist is in the artist ally, and you want the time to wander the vendor booths. We all go to conventions with lofty goals. And if you want to get through even half of them, you need a plan.

Start by picking the events you want to go to, like panels, meet-and-greets, and photo sessions. Look at the guest list and decide who you want to visit. Look at the con’s schedule to decide when to visit their booths. Keep in mind that some will have longer lines than others. Make sure you leave time to wander, too.

Manage Your Cash and Spending

Part of your game plan should include identifying where your cash is going. Naturally, there are going to be some big-ticket splurges you’ll want to make, like an autograph or a piece of quality merch. But keep in mind, you’re also paying for your ticket, parking, and food.

A good idea is to prepay for events when possible and make your big-ticket purchases quickly so you know how much money you have left. Using cash will also help you keep an eye on how much money you have left.

Practice Cosplay Courtesy

Seeing and wearing cosplay is one of the best things about conventions, but it can open up a whole lot of uncomfortable situations if people don’t follow common courtesy. Here’s a quick guide to surviving a geeky convention whether you’re wearing a costume or admiring them:

Take Care of Your Body

Conventions can be tough on the body. Being packed close to other people and staying on your feet for hours can wear you out.

To stave off con sickness and sore feet, be sure to take breaks. Prioritize getting enough sleep, food, and water. Avoid carrying a heavy backpack, and make sure you have some Advil or CBD for chronic pain on hand. That way, you can make the most of your convention weekend.
