Make a pledge to order “Greenwood 100,” our special-edition magazine commemorating the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial.
The Black Wall Street Times was founded by Nehemiah D. Frank in 2017, with the mission that “access is the new civil right.” BWST is a Black-owned and operated independent news publication that lifts Black voices by sharing their narratives and experiences. Nehemiah is also a descendant of Greenwood, dubbed the Black Wall Street. His publication is thriving in the same Greenwood District his ancestors once had their businesses, which were destroyed during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.
Nehemiah is keeping his family’s and community’s legacy alive through The Black Wall Street Times.
This is a monumental year for BWST and the entire Greenwood community. The history of the massacre has not historically been included in K-12 curriculums, but recently filmed documentaries and media coverage have reignited national interest in Tulsa’s dark history. This unique project will include a history of the Greenwood community, which was destroyed in 1921 but was rebuilt in the years that followed. It will also highlight the second destruction caused by gentrification but will showcase members of the community who are making positive impacts today.
Black media is critical in shifting power and equity back into Black communities. BWST shines light on injustices in education, healthcare, economic inequalities and wrongful criminal sentencing often overlooked locally and nationally. BWST not only reports the news and elevate untold stories, they fill the space where the representation of Black and marginalized voices have long been missing from news media.Traffic to the BWST website and social media platforms has continued to build exponentially. Millions of readers have relied on the journalism from BWST since 2017.
As of May 11th, this project has raised $16,000 of their $20,000 goal. This project has 21 days left to raise the $20,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $10, you will get one newspaper.
