We, Women is a nationwide platform supporting women and gender nonconforming artists who combine images and grassroots strategies to create empathy and social impact on critical issues across the United States. We, Women is a project presented by United Photo Industries and Women Photograph.
With your help, We, Women will support art engagement projects in 20 states and create a traveling nationwide exhibition this fall to unite and mobilize communities across the United States, showing how issues are interconnected and how our actions impact each other—even when our experiences are distinctly different.
Every urgent issue in the U.S. today—from immigration to education, affordable housing to climate change, gun control to health care—impacts women. Yet, women and gender nonconforming people are largely disempowered in our political and social systems.
We, Women projects re-frame issues, primarily from the perspective of artists of color, and highlight underrepresented narratives that resist and interrogate social and political landscapes. Despite decades of advances by trailblazing women photographers, mainstream media and art have historically shown the country through a white, male lens. Diversifying the voices that tell our stories is imperative if we want to understand a more complete version of our reality and dismantle unjust power structures. We, Women reclaims photography in an act of visual rebellion: how it’s executed, what it means, and who it reaches.
The United States is more divided than ever, and we’re currently witnessing the highest level of civic engagement in generations. We, Women fuels the movement by combining photography and community engagement to maximize visibility and impact on topics from immigration, criminal justice, and the environment to indigenous issues, sexuality, and race.
In an era characterized by divisiveness and distrust in politics and the media, community engagement is particularly important as it places power and agency into the hands of everyday people by offering a direct route to the core of a problem and the beginning of a solution.
We, Women believes photographs are only the beginning of a creative and socially-minded process. Thus, we will support work that is rooted in collaboration, blurring the lines between author, impacted community, and audience. By shifting traditional visual narratives, We, Women projects will show how photography can be used as tool of inclusive expression, by the people and for the people.
We, Women artists will combine photography with other tools to create empathy and tangible change rather than using images to only raise awareness. Through community engagement, We, Women projects extend the static life of a photograph and create pathways to action. Through this radical transformation of image-making, We, Women believes that we can revolutionize how we see our world and ultimately, ourselves.
As of January 31st, this project has raised $18,000 of their $35,000 goal. This project has 20 days left to raise the $35,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $25, you will get a postcard.
