Catch “The Employables” Interview Done By Calhoun County Insight

Nathan Young, of Anniston, will make his debut on the big screen this month. Nathan will be featured on the A&E television show, The Employables. His episode will air Wednesday, May 29 at 9:00 pm.

The Employables is a show that spotlights individuals with physical disabilities or neurological conditions who have trouble finding employment. Nathan, 32, has autism. “I was diagnosed with Autism at 19,” Nathan explains. “I knew I was different; I just didn’t know what it was.”

Nathan was born in Ohio and has lived in Anniston for the last 10 years. “I’ve done over 10 jobs since high school. A lot didn’t last very long… I’ve applied to thousands and thousands of jobs in my life and I never hear back from them, and when I do they say they’ve hired someone else.”

As the show The Employables reveals, Nathan, and others like him, have exceptional abilities and talents that are often overlooked. One of Nathan’s talents is reporting on local events and happenings on his website, geekalabama.com.

“I started that website in August 2011 when I got fired from my last job,” Nathan says. “I’ve got to cover a lot of amazing things. I feel like the best thing I’ve ever done is start that website.

On geekalabama.com, Nathan shares another one of his gifts, his ability to design elaborate drawings of roads. Click on the tab “Road Drawings” to learn how Nathan crafts these works of art.

Nathan says he hopes his appearance on The Employables inspires change in the workforce. “Give people with disabilities a chance and a shot,” Nathan pleads. “I hope to change the heart of employers… Everybody with a disability has a special talent.”

The Employables takes Nathan on a journey to find a job. He interviews at a few local businesses and eventually lands a part-time gig. You’ll have to watch the episode to see Nathan’s story.
