There’s something great about being completely absorbed by a game and everything it offers. That engrossing storyline or that endlessly playable gameplay mechanic can keep you coming back for more and more. As long as you remember to keep things balanced and occasionally open the curtains to see what’s going on in the outside world, there’s nothing at all wrong with putting a lot of hours into the games you love.
Some of them are more addictive than others though, so we’re going to look at some of the games past and present that are known for being highly addictive for the people who really commit to them. - Civilization
CIvilization has had many sequels now, and each one seems to be more popular than the last, but maybe that’s not so surprising. When you consider the quality of the gameplay and the stakes of the game, it’s no wonder so many people get sucked into it. You have to build up your civilization, working with others around the world or battling them to come out as sole leader of the world. It moves through history and becomes a lot of fun.
- Animal Crossing
This one really is strange because if you haven’t played it before, it can be pretty hard to imagine why it’s so impossible to put down. It’s a life simulator and you play as a character in a town full of little animals. You become the mayor the town and do little tasks like designing the town, planting flowers and socializing with other citizens. There’s nothing exciting or thrilling about it, but it’s very easy to get sucked into.
- Counter-Strike
Counter-strike is a multiplayer game in which two teams battle it out against one another. On the one side, you have a group of people trying to commit an act of terrorism, while the opposition does what it can to stop it from happening. It’s a game that is actually a lot more complex and intricate than it appears to be on the surface, and that’s why the series is still so popular. You get engrossed by the complexity of the gameplay and keep going back for more.
- Minecraft
Minecraft is a game built on building stuff. If you like the idea of having the freedom to create your own worlds, buildings and labyrinthine tunnels, you definitely need to check out Minecraft. But once you get started with it, you probably won’t want to put it down. You can even get seeds for Minecraft that allow you to start in other worlds created by other players. Simply exploring and trying new things is where a lot of the fun comes from.
- Monster Hunter
Monster Hunter is one of those games that’s all about the grind. Once you’ve been grinding away for a while killing basic monsters, you will be able to upgrade your character and upgrade the weapons you use. That’s when you can start to take on bigger monsters, and this cycle goes on and on and on. It’s great at keeping you coming back because there is always an even bigger challenge to complete after you’ve completed the last one.

The Fifa Ultimate Team game mode is one that many people find hard to pull themselves away from. You want to keep building your team, taking on rivals online and getting to the top. The aim for many people is to break into the top 100 players, but you have to have incredible skills to actually make that happen.
- Splatoon 2
Splatoon 2 might look like just another Nintendo game for kids, but it’s so much more than that. The simplicity of the gameplay is what makes it so appealing and easy to pick up; you have two teams of people and the aim is for your team to ink as much of the floor as possible. The team who has the most of their color ink on the ground at the end wins.
These are all fantastic games, but they’re also games that will suck you in and take up huge amounts of your time if you’re not careful about it. You need to find a way to strike the right balance so that you don’t end up getting too absorbed. But you should definitely enjoy them all because they’re a whole lot of fun.
