I wanted to talk about another musician I saw on TV this week, and I thought he had a good voice! Charles Bradley is an American funk/soul/R&B singer, signed to the Daptone Records label under the Dunham Records division. His performances and recording style are consistent with Daptone’s revivalist approach, celebrating the feel of funk and soul music from the 1960s and 1970s. When he was a kid, Charles ran away from home because of poor living conditions and was homeless for two years. Charles joined the Job Corps program and trained as a chef. One day while living in Maine, someone said that he looked like James Brown, and was asked if he could sing.
After he said that he could, he had to overcome some stage fright and played in small shows. Charles then went across America to take odd jobs and was discovered in the 2000’s by Daptone Records. After overcoming homelessness, family members being murdered, and almost dying in a hospital, Charles is now living the American Dream! Charles Bradley was also recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live performing the song “You Put The Flame On It.” The audience liked the song!
