Food Review: Taco Bell’s New Breakfast

Advertisements

Down here in Alabama, people like to take their breakfast very seriously at the fast-food joints.  The three fast-food joints that gets the most customers, are Jack’s Family Restaurants, Hardee’s, and McDonald’s.  Jack’s and Hardee’s makes all of their biscuits from scratch every morning at each of their locations.  The result, fresh and fluffy biscuits that are yummy!  Even McDonald’s now makes their biscuits from scratch every morning as well now.  This is why these three fast-food joints gets most of the customers every morning.  And now here comes Taco Bell with their new breakfast menu.  Taco Bell thought now was a good time to introduce their new breakfast menu nationwide.  And they have a lot of catching up to do to get to the same customer levels you see at Jack’s, Hardee’s, and McDonald’s, at least here in Alabama.

Over the weekend, I went down to Taco Bell to try their new breakfast, that launched nationwide late last week.  The breakfast menu features items like the AM Crunchwrap, breakfast burritos, Waffle Taco, grilled tacos, flatbread melts, Cinnabon Delights, and more.  Taco Bell came out with a very smart marketing campaign when they went to people who are actually named Ronald McDonald and had them try out their new breakfast!

So I got a sausage AM Crunchwrap, sausage Waffle Taco, two Cinnabon Delights, and a Mountain Dew Baja Blast, by the way I am glad to see Baja Blast coming to the stores!

Let’s start with the sausage AM Crunchwrap.  It comes with fluffy scrambled eggs, a golden crispy hash brown, real cheddar cheese, and a delicious sausage patty, wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla and grilled, so it’s good to go.  I thought this was a winner!  The product was very good, and I could taste the Mexican spices and flair in this Crunchwrap.  I would come back to Taco Bell for this!

Then the sausage Waffle Taco, which everyone is talking about.  The product comes in a warm waffle wrapped around a delicious sausage patty and fluffy scrambled eggs topped with cheese and served with a side of sweet syrup.  Yeah, Taco Bell uses a waffle instead of a taco shell, and this item works!  The taco combined with the syrup tastes very good!  My advice, do not eat the Waffle Taco with syrup on it while you are driving down the road, things could get messy.

Then the two Cinnabon Delights, which comes with a combo meal.  They are warm, golden bite-sized pastries filled with Cinnabon frosting and covered with Makara cinnamon sugar.  I enjoyed the cinnamon and the creme filling inside.  Advice, use the leftover syrup from the Waffle Taco and dip these in the syrup!

Overall, I enjoyed the breakfast from Taco Bell.  But one has to wonder how much of the products was prepared and made fresh at the restaurant and how much came straight out of a box and was just warmed up.  I was the only person eating inside at Taco Bell on Sunday morning, and only a couple of cars came through the drive-thru while I was there.  I asked the employees there seeing how many customers have come through since launching, and they said business has been so-so.  Like I said on top, if Taco Bell wants to take breakfast seriously down here in Alabama, here is some advice from Geek Alabama.

In my opinion, I think most of the breakfast products came straight out of the box and was just warmed up.  Granted, things like the tortillas and cheese are going to come from a box, but Taco Bell could make the scrambled eggs fresh, they could make the waffles fresh, and they could cook the bacon and sausage fresh as well.  While I was eating, I was watching the McDonald’s across the street, and they were seeing a lot of business!  I know why, they make most of their stuff fresh and made from scratch!

And yes, I see that McDonald’s came out with this clever social media ad.

Taco Bell is clearly aiming for the Millennial market with their new breakfast.  I thought their new breakfast was very good!  And I would come back to eat breakfast there again.  But if Taco Bell wants to capture a lot more people down here in Alabama, they better be making most of their stuff from scratch, in each of their restaurants.  This is how people in Alabama wants their breakfast!  For now, since Taco Bell just started breakfast, I give them two thumbs up.  Go to Taco Bell and try their breakfast, you will not regret it!
