Good News Fridays: Batkid Saves The Day

I had another post planned for Good News Fridays, until a special event happened in San Francisco today!  Did you have a tough week or do you need something special to read?  Than this post is for you!   The Make-A-Wish Foundation helped a five year-old cancer patient named Miles Scott live out a wish to become Batman.  Thanks to the overwhelming support of over 12,000 volunteers, they were able to send Miles on an adventure of rescuing citizens, battling supervillains, and even getting the key to the city in an effort to give him the best day ever.

Miles has had to battle with leukemia.  He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was 20 months old.  And recently, the family learned that his leukemia was in remission.  With the help of social media and the city of San Francisco, the city was turned into Gotham City all for Miles!  After the family arrived in San Francisco, Miles gets a breaking news bulletin from San Francisco’s police chief pleading for Batman and Batkid to help save his city.  Miles then left the Bat Cave for an action-packed day which included rescuing a women in distress on the trolley tracks who was strapped to a bomb, stopping the Riddler who was robbing a bank, while eating lunch a flashmob showed up to dance to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”, and rescuing the San Francisco Giants’ mascot from The Penguin at the Giants’ AT&T Park.

Miles acts of bravery were then rewarded in front of thousands outside San Francisco’s City Hall, where Mayor Ed Lee presented him with the key to the city.  The mayor declared November 15th as Batkid Day Forever.  And even the Justice Department sent out a press release announcing charges against The Riddler and The Penguin.  View it at: http://www.justice.gov/usao/can/news/2013/2013_11_15_riddler.penguin.charged

At each stop along the route, hundreds of people jammed the sidewalks cheering on Batkid.  And no doubt, there were people shedding a few tears.  This was an awesome day for Miles Scott and for San Francisco.  Miles is one of the many young people with life-threatening illnesses that the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish for each year. Patricia Wilson, who is the executive director of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, said that in 15 years with her organization she’d never seen anything like the online reaction this story got, and she grants some 350 wishes per year.  At the end of the day, the San Francisco Chronicle celebrated Batkid with a special edition.
