TV Review: Fangasm on Syfy Channel

Have you checked out this new reality TV series on Syfy Channel called Fangasm?  If not, you should give this show a try!  Fangasm premiered a few weeks ago and the show is about seven interns from around the country who lives in a LA apartment complex and works together at Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo as interns.  The seven must contend with each others oversized personalities and conflicting fandom as they vie for an opportunity to work within Lee’s organization.

The series is produced from the same people who brought us Jersey Shore, don’t get me started on that show.  Fangasm is a six-part docuseries that celebrates the incredibly unique, often misunderstood, and infinitely fascinating fan girl and fan boy culture commonly known as geeks and nerds.  The show follows seven pop culture-obsessed fans whom freaks out when they see people like George Takei and Stan Lee.  Syfy is promoting this show as the real life version of the popular TV show The Big Bang Theory.  And I can say they are absolutely correct!  They even say when different passions come together, you get a real big bang.  Yep, they said that.

So for the first two episodes, we got to see the seven arrive at the offices of Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo.  They were told that “you guys just won the nerd lottery.”  Their first task was to collect signatures to make Geek Pride Day a national holiday, and they forgot the signature pads.  But they got plenty of help from people who cosplay to get a couple hundred signatures.  Then some of the interns participated in a contest where they had to hold a Star Trek phaser up in the air for the longest amount of time.  The prize was dinner with George Takei.  Behold, one of the interns on the show won and after dinner, he freaked out his roommates.  Some were in total nerd shock!

The second episode featured the interns creating potential viral videos.  Some excelled while some fell flat.  During the time in LA, the interns are recording a podcast and working behind the scenes for Stan Lee.  Keep in mind they are interns, so they are going out to get the boss lunch, coffee, or supplies.  And they must bring back change and a receipt!  Fangasm mixes The Real World, The Apprentice, and The Big Bang Theory together to bring us the ultimate geek/nerd competition.  Who wouldn’t want to work for Stan Lee?

In our world today where anything geeky or nerdy is always very popular, Fangasm attempts to give everyday people a chance to work with one of the greatest minds in the geek/nerd world.  They have to go through real life and small tasks to get to that point!  These folks complained about how women in scantily clad super hero outfits parading on stage were making the boys let their tongues drop to which person in a cameo is the best in the geek/nerd world.  Ahh, geeks and nerds at their finest!

I will watch the last four episodes of Fangasm to see what happens.  Maybe all seven will become more popular in the geek/nerd world and have successful careers.  One can hope!  New episodes of Fangasm airs on Tuesday night on Syfy Channel.  To learn more about Fangasm, go to: http://www.syfy.com/fangasm.  Follow them on Facebook at:  https://www.facebook.com/FangasmSyfy and on Twitter @FangasmSyfy.
