Film in America is about to change for good. At the end of 2013, all future films will be all digital. That means no more film projector movies will be distributed to the local theaters. For any local theaters that have not upgraded their equipment yet, time is running out. Many local theaters have gone the Kickstarter route to get up to $80,000 to fund the upgrade. But some local theaters will not have the crowdsourcing support. That’s where Honda comes in!
Honda is running a very unique project, and time is running out to support your local drive-in movie theater. In less than 3 months, the majority of American drive-in theaters will face closure with the movie industry’s switch from film to digital. Upgrading to digital projection costs roughly $80,000 per theater. Honda wants to preserve this iconic part of the American car culture. So they are taking the first step by starting a drive-in fund and donating five digital projectors. And the public gets to vote and decide where they will go.
According to Project Drive-in, there are currently 368 theaters left and many of them are local and family owned for decades. For years, many people would wait for dusk and drive to the local drive-in to watch a great movie. Admission was cheap and the food at the concession stand was cheap as well. It would be a shame to see many of the local drive-ins disappear for good. In Alabama, there are two local drive-ins in the running for the free digital projector which are Henagar Drive-In in Henagar, AL and the Blue Moon Drive-In in Guin, AL. The Wilderness Drive-In in Trenton, GA and the Iuka Drive-In in Iuka, MS are also in the running!
