Learn More About The Falafel’s Garden Children’s Book Kickstarter Campaign

picture1sdgewe

Sorry folks for the lack of posts.  I am still busy building the new website.  In fact this will probably be the final post under the old look before Geek Alabama moves to a newly designed site!  Anyways, for this post I wanted to talk about a Kickstarter project someone e-mailed me about.  This project is about the outdoor environment and uses some creative animal hand puppets to tell the story!

Falafel’s garden is a rhyming children’s book about gardening, cooking, and forgiveness. A clumsy, yoga-loving llama, a socially anxious sheep, and an epicurean horse come together in this endearing, yet humorous tale of the trials of friendship. Written in anapestic tetrameter, the rhythm of the book will be sure to delight readers of all ages!

Falafel the Llama, Baxter the Horse, and Griswold the Sheep are the characters in the children’s book.  Fluffmonger wrote brief story lines for them and painted ‘pop-up’ scenery for them to live in.  From the moment they created them, they knew they deserved more than a few sentences for their stories.  The book will be printed on 100% recycled paper in the US, and the plushes will be made in their studio using hand dyed organic fabrics, organic thread, and organic buckwheat hulls.

This project will close on Thursday, October 6th.  For a pledge of $25 will get a copy of the book, coloring pages, and a pesto recipe card.  For a pledge of $130, you will get a signed copy of the book, one of the three handmade plush animals, and more!  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1063630813/falafels-garden-eco-friendly-childrens-book-and-pl/description

Kickstarter Tuesdays: GutenTag / TinyGlo

Geek Alabama Kickstarter Projects

This week on Kickstarter Tuesdays, let’s talk about two projects from Georgia and Tennessee that you need to support!

GutenTag

0f40d780c99c243639c86228b7f2ce1b_original

No more complex agendas, journals, apps… GutenTag is an elegant offline solution for planning your day. Stamp it, draw it, do it. Perfect for those of us who are visual learners, creatives, and the rest of the world that is overwhelmed.  No more linear lists and starting the day feeling overwhelmed. Stamp the day, and draw in your meetings and to-do’s. Use pencil, pen, crayons – it’s up to you! Don’t worry about coloring outside the lines – there aren’t any! Be creative. Be productive. Be yourself.  Made by craftsmen in Maine from dense rock maple, the GutenTag stamp is beautiful on any desk. The clock face is actually printed directly onto the wood with paint. With use, the stamp takes on a character and patina of its own. You’ll enjoy yours for years to come.

Here are some features about the design!

  • 6:00pm – 6:00am is compressed since most people don’t plan as much during these hours. This design allows more room to draw in meetings and to-do’s during working hours. Don’t worry, you still have some room during these hours if you need it.
  • Date can be written on the center line.
  • Clean, minimal, design looks sharp on any paper.
  • Stamp face is 1.75 inches in diameter (approx. 44.5mm)
  • Wooden stamp handle is 2 inches wide and 1 inch tall (approx. 50.8mm wide and 25.4mm tall) and made in the USA from dense rock maple.

MathKit

07206260d6d65578716dda65eb7b66c2_original

Leslie is the college math teacher mom who invented MathKit.  Learning math opens doors to being a vet, an architect, an animator – many of the careers her seven-year-old daughter dreams of.  But, research shows that many girls start to shy away from hard problems and lose math confidence as early as third grade. MathKit applies research on math and mindset to help kids, especially girls, persist through mistakes and struggle.

MathKit isn’t just for families that love math. MathKit helps all families teach kids how to be successful at math. Even a little math playtime has a real impact. Their kids dream big – let’s give them big math confidence to keep the future open!  MathKit is a set of 10 hands-on games and math learning tools, designed to boost confidence and help your K-3 child master addition and subtraction facts from 0-20.

MathKit inspires confidence by helping parents create a safe space for their children to learn. MathKit games are designed to be playful and relaxing, and don’t race on mathematical thinking. MathKit reduces anxiety by teaching that mistakes are a natural part of learning. Games don’t punish mistakes. MathKit’s learning tools help children work through mistakes with understanding. The games easily adjust to your child’s level, to keep her learning in her own “sweet spot” where the math is not too easy, but not too hard.

MathKit is for all children K-3. But girls are disproportionately losing math confidence.  She carefully crafted games and tips based on research on girls and math, while keeping the kit welcoming and inclusive for boys.  MathKit includes ten games to choose from: indoor and outdoor, active and quiet. Watch your child discover her favorites!  They are ready to bring MathKit to the next level. MathKit is made with high quality materials, and they currently handmake every kit. In order to scale up, they need funds to purchase larger sets of supplies at lower cost, and the numbers to move assembly and shipping to a fulfillment center. Please help them reach their funding goal by donating (and getting one of their awesome rewards) and by helping to spread the word!

Watch Veritasium Talk About Snatoms! The Magnetic Molecular Modeling Kit

Picture1WFWEFE

On the latest episode of the YouTube channel Veritasium, Derek Muller talks about an educational product to help people learn chemistry.  The product is called Snatoms!  This product was created as a hands on way for people to learn about chemistry.  Snatoms are a molecular modeling kit where the atoms snap together magnetically. Kits will include the three most important atoms for life: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen to make glucose – the basic sugar molecule.  And to create Snatoms!, a Kickstarter campaign was launched!

The Snatoms kit includes six carbon atoms, six oxygen atoms and twelve hydrogen atoms. From these basic building blocks you can build tons of different compounds from water and hydrogen peroxide through to cyclohexane and glucose.  Snatoms allows people of all ages to learn chemistry hands on. By supporting Snatoms, you’ll be funding the production of the best molecular modeling kit from start to finish. If you agree that this is an awesome educational tool that should exist in the world, help him kickstart it and tell your friends!

As of November 13th, this project has raised around $150,000 of their $42,000 goal. This project only has 40 days left to raise as much as it can!  For a pledge of $30, you will get a Snatoms t-shirt.  For a pledge of $42, you will get one Snatoms kit.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/veritasium/snatoms-the-magnetic-molecular-modeling-kit

Kickstarter Tuesdays: Our Broken Plate / New Psalms & Hymns

Geek Alabama Kickstarter Projects

This week on Kickstarter Tuesdays, let’s talk about two more Alabama Kickstarter projects that you need to support!

Our Broken Plate

our-broken-plate

Ray Cronise has been a scientist and publishing in peer-reviewed journals in areas of biophysics, material science, neural networks, and fluid physics for over 25 years.  He began his career as a scientist at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center where he worked for 15 years. During that time, along with business partners Peter Diamandis and Byron Lichtenberg, he was at the epicenter for the birth of commercial space flight in co-founding Zero Gravity Corporation, the first FAA-approved commercial parabolic weightless experience.

After leaving NASA and 8 years of building a composites manufacturing facility, he hit a health crisis largely due to diet and the unending drive of work.  He was fat and sick and he wanted that to change.  He too had read a plethora of diet books and simply failed, but it was the contradictions that bothered him most. Since that time he has assembled a world class team of researchers from institutions like Harvard, NIH, and Vanderbilt and wants to share with you some of the puzzling discrepancies they have uncovered and perhaps some new explanations for why some old ideas were always correct.  Their first paper, Metabolic Winter Hypothesis came out in 2014 and two more will be out soon.

Our Broken Plate isn’t a textbook and doesn’t require multiple degrees to read. In fact, he wants to substantially simplify things and change the way we talk about food.  To get this book written, however, he needs your help.  It requires his full attention for the next five months, while at the same time keeping my research funded. It requires additional costly self-testing to demonstrate parts of my thesis that remain open to debate. And it requires money to fund an initial press run from an independent publisher.

As of November 10th, this Kickstarter project has raised around $55,000 of the $10,000 goal they need to be funded. And as you know in Kickstarter, a project is not funded until the fundraising goal is reached! This project only has 32 days left to raise as much as it can!  For a pledge of $22, you will get one copy of the book.  For a pledge of $27, you will get one signed copy of the book.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/595953230/our-broken-plate

New Psalms & Hymns from Wendell Kimbrough

71a09a0e8598cd37953d0aef441b397d_original

Wendell Kimbrough is asking for your help in funding the recording of an album of 10-12 psalms and hymns.  This is a project for the Church.  He fully expects that those who hear this album will enjoy a great listening experience.  But these songs were written to be sung, and the aim of this project is to bring these songs to life in churches and homes and wherever people gather for worship.

To aid church music/worship leaders in learning and leading these songs, He will also be building resources to accompany the album: chord charts, YouTube videos teaching how to play the songs, and song booklets for use at small gatherings like house shows or hymn sings.  Why the Psalms?  He believes in the power of singing together. Our whole selves—body, mind, and soul—are engaged when we sing. And the songs we choose to sing form us; they shape who we are and what we love.  And because the Psalms are so honest about all of life–from joy and celebration to depths of despair–singing them shapes us into truthful, vulnerable, real people.  In other words, the Psalms help us tell the truth and stop pretending.  You can hear more of his convictions about singing the Psalms in a sermon he gave here.

As of November 10th, this Kickstarter project has raised around $9,000 of the $16,840 goal they need to be funded. And as you know in Kickstarter, a project is not funded until the fundraising goal is reached! This project only has 23 days left to raise the $16,840 or it will not be funded!  For a pledge of $10, you will get a digital download of the album.  For a pledge of $20, you will get one copy of the physical CD.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/247220177/new-psalms-and-hymns-from-wendell-kimbrough
