This is Crowdsourcing Weekends! This post highlights three different crowdsourcing projects I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

PowerMe

tsq6mlxsi3plkamn9cnm

PowerMe is an all-in-one cable. It has multiple functions that make it an essential gadget for everyone.  PowerMe can charge any microUSB or lightning device by taking power from most devices; it can also move files between devices, like photos, videos etc.  Plus, thanks to the USB adapter, when you’re home you can use PowerMe as a classic microUSB or lightning charging cable.  PowerMe can charge any microUSB or lightning device and can take energy from almost any microUSB smartphone or tablet.

Thanks to the OTG technology, PowerMe can take energy from most microUSB devices, including smartphones and tablets; if you are used to mid or high end devices, you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues.  Mobile devices are all around us, and every device is a potential power source.  You can take energy from your friend’s phone, or share yours if someone needs it!  Their lightning adapter is crafted to fit PowerMe specifically.  They designed it to guarantee a visual continuity between the connector and the adapter and to be tight when plugged into the connector, so you will not lose it on the road.  However, since PowerMe follows the industrial standards, any other microUSB to lightning adapter will be fine too.

The Pizza Book

3254d244070d29e7e3b9c2eed3fba182_original

Around 10 years ago, Mike received something special from an old friend – a pizza dough recipe. He worked on it for a while, and eventually passed it along to Aaron.  This pizza recipe was so awesome that Mike started to write a cookbook around it – how to make the dough, some ideas for pies that you could make, stuff like that. He shared it with Aaron, who was already completely obsessed with the recipe. Aaron took it and evolved it further, writing notes, and testing as he went.

Since then, three babies and a podcast were born, and the idea to revive “The Pizza Book” seemed like a really good one. They were getting together every week to work on their podcast and share their ideas and visions, and this gave them an excuse to finally make the book a reality.  A cookbook about pizza is a chance to show off some of their favorite flavor combinations, cultural inspirations, personal quirks, and more. This cookbook lets them share so much more than just the recipe for the dough itself – it’s a chance to really have fun with it.

Make Time Clock

8ae5825a361f756806ca9da85241a6fb_original

Make Time Clock records progress. It has a single button to “clock-in” during work sessions. As you use it you’ll begin to understand your creative rhythm and be empowered to harness it.  Balancing creativity with everyday life is hard. Too often a day will end in front of the TV instead of rallying to make progress on a side project. Since nobody’s expecting the work and the deadlines are internal, projects slow to a crawl without much consequence.  But with Make Time Clock, there’s a physical monument to your project and progress. This can create a shared understanding between you and loved ones who share your space and want to support your projects.

Using a clock can be helpful to young creators or experienced folks looking to take on a new challenge. Its minimalist design can adapt to most creative projects.  Make Time Clock is a beautiful object that’s finished like a fine piece of furniture. They designed it so that you’ll be proud to display it in your workspace.  The clock is crafted out of solid walnut and sits almost 3 inches square. It has 6 RGB LEDs on the front, a metal switch on the top, and a power cord on the back.  Inside is a WiFi and a power module. This allows you to connect the clock to your local network to customize settings with their free companion app.

Crowdsourcing Weekends: The American Press, The Lost Work, Spritz Bottle

Geek Alabama Crowdsourcing

This is Crowdsourcing Weekends! This post highlights three different crowdsourcing projects I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

The American Press

vbbdvg5bdtjxhfukonzj

The American Press is unlike any brewer you’ve seen before. Its patented design brews quickly, has its own unique brewing character, is easy to clean, and offers a visually stunning, hands-on brewing experience that you simply have to see to believe.  The American Press rapidly brews a rich and smooth cup by forcing water through an enclosed, reusable pod and an ultra-fine steel filter as you press. It combines the hands-on control connoisseurs love with simplicity and ease of use to create a craft coffee experience that’s perfect for every morning.

But the most striking part is what happens when you press. You’re in control of forcing water through our patented pod as you press, creating a visual brewing experience that’s unique in the coffee world. And since you control the speed, pressure and timing of extraction, you can brew your cup, your way, without the elbow grease you may be used to, thanks to their low-friction hydraulic seal.  The American Press has many advantages but they’re especially proud of fulfilling their original mission and inspiration to create a “coffee press without the mess”. Their reusable pod keeps mess contained and waste out of landfills, so cleanup is easy and it’s eco-friendly, too. And it wouldn’t be a coffee press without the mess if it dripped coffee all over the place, so their specially designed steel pouring edge is guaranteed to never spill a drop!

The Lost Work of Will Eisner

e9a43c098419220856d754081ec8f749_original

The very earliest comics by the great Will Eisner (The Spirit, A Contract with God, namesake of the prestigious Eisner Awards) have recently been discovered. They intend to publish these almost entirely never-before-seen strips from his teenage years in a definitive edition which will highlight the first origins of one of the forefathers of modern cartooning. And they can’t do it without you.  When the New Jersey artist and antique collector Joseph Getsinger acquired an enormous, 10,000-piece collection of 1930s-era cartoon printing plates, he had no idea what riches it contained — just a hunch that there might be some diamonds in the rough. During his research, he became fascinated with two strips in particular: UNCLE OTTO by one “Carl Heck” and HARRY KARRY, credited to an unknown artist named “Willis B. Rensie.”

As Joe began to investigate the provenance of this massive collection, he found that it was linked to Empire Features, a company that provided printing plates to various newspapers for syndication. Eisner & Iger Studios — the partnership between the very young Jerry Iger and Will Eisner to distribute and publish their many fledgling comic books, strips, and magazines — was one of Empire Features’ many customers.  One day shortly after becoming aware of this connection, Getsinger was looking at a reverse-printed HARRY KARRY plate and it came to him in a flash: “Rensie” was Eisner spelled backwards. He suddenly knew that what he had here was of extraordinary historical value.  They want to publish this important document of the genesis of one of the most influential and brilliant cartoonists of all time. With your help, they can.

Spritz Smart Water Bottle

12096206_1601795483413165_6766263905572104330_n

They’ve merged 2 essential aspects of life seamlessly into an elegant solution that integrates STUDIO GRADE audio into a state of the art rugged, smart water-bottle that’s wirelessly controlled from your smartphone.  Spritz is about incredible acoustics. It’s a wireless music player that’s designed and built with extremely advanced audio technology, then calibrated and tuned by a professional recording studio.  It can work wirelessly, streaming music from your smartphone, and comes with an app (iOS and Android versions) that fully controls SPRITZ. Or you can also use it without your smartphone, as a stand alone MP3 player, using a standard microSD card to store and play up to 32GB of your music.

But Spritz is also about personal healthcare. It provides you with the ability to carry essential drinking water (or any hydration fluid) for your active lifestyle, and is smart enough to REMIND you to STAY hydrated. All this in a rugged and robust bottle that’s waterproof rated at IPX4 and durable enough to handle practically any activity, including active sports.  It’s so easy to get caught up in our everyday lives, that something as important as keeping our bodies well hydrated often slips our minds, and can even be damaging to our bodies. To tackle this problem, they’ve developed a system that can remind you as frequently (or not)as you like, to take a sip of water!  Using the app, Spritz automatically pauses the music that’s playing, to remind you to hydrate yourself at your desired time interval, using a gentle notification of your choice.

Crowdsourcing Weekends: Tempescope, The Maya Angelou Documentary, SpeedForce

Geek Alabama Crowdsourcing

This is Crowdsourcing Weekends! This post highlights three different crowdsourcing projects I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

Tempescope

oomskmo76cxzidmhcy7a

A physical display that reproduces various weather conditions according to the weather forecast. It’s like having a window that lets you look outside at tomorrow’s sky.  With a tempescope, you don’t have to open an app to find out if it’s going to rain today- just take a glance as you leave the house!  Have a family living far away? You can now share a sky with them. Specify a location from the tempescope app, and your tempescope will always be “synced” to a distant sky.  Everyone loves reading on a rainy day. The app lets you manually set the weather to play, so you can enjoy any weather, whatever it looks like outside.

The perks they are offering will be kits which you need to build yourself. It won’t be hard. You will need to read a very simple manual, connect a few wires together (but no soldering needed!) and screw together 3 or 4 components. The reason they’re making this as a kit is because they’d like the first people to use this gadget to be OK with taking the extra few steps to finish this off, in the spirit of their open source roots. (and it makes the cost to produce about half what it would be.)  While they are confident that they can deliver the kits you’ll love, let them be open with the fact that there are still risks involved with this (and any) crowd funding campaign.

The Maya Angelou Documentary

3de2ecd03350ae899f2479debcd8f1e7_original

The Maya Angelou Documentary is the first documentary about Dr. Maya Angelou. As friends from Dr. Angelou’s inner circle, they have been granted remarkable and unmatched access to Dr. Angelou’s life. After years of working on this film, they are honored to present her incredible journey to the rest of the world.  Dr. Angelou has become a global symbol of peace, humility, and freedom–– but parts of her story are not well known. The Maya Angelou Documentary will reflect on how the events of history, culture, and the arts shaped Dr. Angelou’s life and how she, in turn, helped shape our own worldview through her autobiographical literature and activism. They hope to shed light on the untold aspects of her life and to educate audiences about her story.

They will examine Dr. Angelou’s remarkable life––from her birth in 1928 to her passing in May of 2014––which spanned the Jim Crow South, the Civil Rights, the Women’s, and Art Movements, along with her impact on celebrity and mainstream popular culture.  Their team filmed Dr. Angelou at the Smithsonian Institution in April of 2014 when her portrait was unveiled for the National Portrait Gallery and at the 2014 Women2Women Conference in Atlanta, amongst other momentous events. We last interviewed Dr. Angelou in January of 2014.

This is a documentary for those who miss Dr. Angelou’s voice, and for future generations who need to hear her impactful words. Help them memorialize Dr. Angelou––her work, her life, her legacy.  They are also in a logistical time crunch to finish the documentary for its broadcast premiere on the PBS series American Masters. With a story so vast and varied, there are tremendous archival licensing rights costs for images and footage that they need to account for. In addition, they need to finish the final edits, plus mixing, and color correction.

SpeedForce

k15lsetjsxk4cnpk6rbl

They created SpeedForce as a way to bring technology and cycling together in one place. SpeedForce is a fully integrated smart cycling computer that replaces your stem, combines different cycling products together, measures over 8 sets of data, and comes with an app.  The elegant, integrated design seamlessly incorporates a GPS cycling computer with a power supply, headlight, and navigation. It becomes the stem of your bike for a full integration rather than as an extra part.  SpeedForce has additional pedal and wheel sensors that ensure the highest accuracy. With each pedal, SpeedForce can pick up and calculate your riding data: speed, time, distance, track, heart rate, altitude, temperature, and cadence.

With a built-in GPS chip that syncs with your phone’s GPS, SpeedForce has turn signal indicators that light up to tell you where to turn next without needing to glance at your smartphone. It makes riding with navigation on safer and easier.  SpeedForce can operate up to 40 hours (16 hours with GPS navigation on). The removable battery offers more power options; just pack one more battery with you and SpeedForce will last through a long distance ride.  The data from SpeedForce can sync with their SpeedX app so you can access your data using your smartphone anytime instead of needing a computer. It also allows you to share your data with other users and see how others are doing as well. You can view a leaderboard and compete with others.

Crowdsourcing Weekends: iTraq Plus, Critter Bitters, The BuzzClip

Geek Alabama Crowdsourcing

This is Crowdsourcing Weekends! This post highlights three different crowdsourcing projects I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

iTraq Plus

i8szwekp5tekcskkkmft

iTraq+ is a hybrid (Cellular+GPS) tracking device – the world’s first global location device that can be found anywhere in the world where cellular service exists.  The iTraq+ has the added features of being rechargeable and, in addition to cellular tracking technology, includes enhanced GPS tracking to offer more precise location information whenever needed.  Many location devices use Bluetooth wireless technology which limits their use to finding things within the house such as lost keys, remote controls, etc.  Other location devices use GPS modules (Global Positioning System), which cannot be found when inside a building.

iTraq+ provides a hybrid approach, which covers the globe and sees through buildings by using Cellular technology (Cell-ID). It also has the ability to switch to GPS for accurate location reading when necessary.  Simply attach iTraq+ to a bicycle or boat, place it in the pocket of your child, or even attach it to your luggage, and find it even if your bags traveled to another country or continent.  Most of the time iTraq+ uses cell towers to calculate its location. This determines where your device is located within a city block, while remaining in the low power consumption mode. It will be sufficient to understand if your child is at school or on a football field, or if your car is at home or some place across the city.

Critter Bitters

7ff460c192c9f372d3a0bd8ab9dd0d21_original

Cocktail bitters, sometimes considered the salt and pepper of cocktails, are a bartender’s best friend. Bitters add depths of flavor to drinks. They’re also good for stimulating digestion before and after meals.  Critter Bitters are cocktail bitters with a bite. They’re made with toasted crickets, which add a sweet, nutty note to drinks.  And what’s more, Critter Bitters are the gateway to eating insects. Over two billion people around the world already eat insects regularly. But for those of us who don’t, the idea might be hard to swallow.  Instead of adopting other cultures’ traditions of eating insects, Critter Bitters give us the liquid courage we need to spark our own insect-eating traditions.

Up until this point, they’ve been making Critter Bitters in small batches at home. But there’s some serious demand for Critter Bitters (More than they could have ever imagined when they first made the prototype in grad school).  So far, the bitters have fueled hackathons, won design awards, and flown to Milan for design week.  They’ve been on panels about the future of food and about entomophagy. But they haven’t been able to scale up their production so that they can share the bitters with everyone who wants them.  In order to produce their first big run of Critter Bitters, they need some support.  They’re trying to figure out how many people want to try Critter Bitters.  For now, Critter Bitters are exclusively available on Kickstarter. This is your opportunity to be the first of your friends to get Critter Bitters, before they take the world by storm.

The BuzzClip

sfbkln744cht8ehhnqxj

The BuzzClip is a small and discreet wearable for people that are blind or partially sighted. The device uses ultrasound to detect obstacles that may lie directly in one’s path. It then notifies the user of these obstacles through intuitive vibrations, allowing the user to safely navigate around any objects that they may encounter. The BuzzClip offers essential head level obstacle detection and can be attached to many forms of clothing, making it a highly versatile and useful device.  The BuzzClip can accurately detect anything coming into its range of detection. The sensor ensures that the distance to any nearby obstacles is accurately measured regardless of lighting conditions or transparency of the object.

It does this by sending and receiving sound waves. The received information is then relayed back to the user instantly through intuitive vibrations.  The BuzzClip has two selectable ranges: a 1 meter range and a 2 meter range. Users can gauge the distance to an object within the specified range through intuitive vibrations from the BuzzClip.  The BuzzClip can be worn many different ways based on one’s mobility needs. It can be easily clipped onto shirts, t-shirts, on sleeves (long or short), sweaters, jeans, sweatpants, and more.  They’ve spent a lot of resources to get this far, but now they need your help. With your backing they will be able to make a BuzzClip available to all those who need one. The funds raised through their campaign will help them achieve their final milestones.
