Learn more about me by reading below or viewing my visual resume!

Yeah, some of you might think I am weird and/or interesting, but let me explain.  I am the main writer, editor, and publisher of Geek Alabama.  I also take the pictures and videos that appear on Geek Alabama and the photo blog Traffic Light Pixels.  I started Young’s Blog in August 2011 as a way to keep me occupied while I was without a job.  And on April 2012 I relaunched as Geek Alabama and it has become well known and that amazes me!  I never thought that the blogs would be viewed by lots of people.  And I thank all of the readers who read my blog!  For new readers to the Geek Alabama blog, watch the Geek Alabama Intro Video / Channel Trailer!

Here are the seven things you need to know about Nathan Young.  Read below or enjoy a video and a presentation version below!

First off, I am a huge road geek!  Yep, I enjoy driving on roads, taking pictures of road scenes, watching traffic on the side of the road, keeping up with stories involving roads, and of course I draw roads as well!  (look at my road drawings page)  I also collect old traffic lights and road stuff.  I have been drawing roads since I was a very young kid in school, and some find it weird that I draw roads.  But guess what; I will never give up my hobby of loving roads!  It sticks with you for life!

1

Second, I am also a huge train fan.  Most people find a train as a major inconvenience because they have to sit there while the train goes by.  But for me, a train can make me sit there for as long as it is.  You will often find me standing at a railroad crossing with a camera in hand to take pictures of trains and railroad crossings. Since I was little I always loved looking at trains.  We used to live right next to a train track and when the RR lights came on I ran to a window to look at the train going by.  I even would go down a road along a railroad to chase a train. But I always do not cross in front of a train!

2

Third, food and cooking is something I like to enjoy.  Yeah I might be a little overweight, but in the south you have to enjoy food, it is a part of the culture!  I find that you can never have enough food!  Some popular in the south includes BBQ and things fried like chicken fingers.  I also enjoy cooking meals and you will often find me cooking a wide variety of meals and foods that I often give away to other people.  Being a foodie is awesome!  You don’t have to worry about what is going to be for dinner, because you can come up with something creative!

3

Fourth, living in Alabama means you always have to pay attention to the weather.  Alabama can see all types of weather from snow storms, hail storms, ice storms, hurricanes, severe storms, extreme winds, flooding, extreme hot and cold, and of course tornadoes.  Alabama is home to the most diverse weather in the world!  Since the April 27th tornado outbreak that killed many in Alabama, people have become more aware of weather in Alabama, and that is a good thing!  All the meteorologists follows me on social media, and you might find me chasing bad weather and taking pictures and videos.  The sunsets are great too!

4

Fifth, I am a huge animal lover!  Most pets like cats and dogs usually comes right up to me to enjoy some love from my hands!  It usually does not matter what the personality type the pets are, they come up and demand some love!  And yes, I enjoy petting animals!  If you are asking, I am not a vegetarian, but I was raised to respect animals.  I have had a wide variety of pets including dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys, quail, turtles, horses, and fish as well.  I have also helped to rescue pets, and they are usually the best pets to have!  Come on over pets, I will give you plenty of pets, love, and of course plenty of treats!

5

Sixth, since I run a popular and growing website, I have to follow the news.  I keep up with local and world news.  And I read a wide variety of local and national websites every day.  And I have enjoyed watching the news since I was in kindergarten.  When I was young, I would get up at 5:30 am just to watch the morning news before going to school.  Today with my camera, I go out to cover local events or scenes.   My belief is you need to know what is going on in the world; because one day it might just impact you!  My favorite time of the year is Christmas and I have taken a lot of Christmas themed photos and videos!

6

The last thing you need to know about me is I am a huge animation and cartoon fan!  The reason why I love watching a wide variety of cartoons comes from my childhood, where I was abused and neglected, and watching cartoons was an escape to the problems I was facing.  This has carried over to my adulthood, and you will often find me enjoying cartoons every day!  I am always amazed in the hard work it takes to make a cartoon.  A cartoon can do many things an average TV show can not do.  Some of the cartoons I like are The Simpsons; Family Guy; The Legend of Korra, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Phineas and Ferb, Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and more!

Some other things I like includes listening to music, keeping up with sports, helping people, and I am very good at computers too!  A lot of people who I talk too think I am a great person to be around who is funny, interesting and informative.  I also like to really keep up with current topics and open to trying new things.  The one personal thing I talk about is autism awareness.  Yes I do have Asperger’s Syndrome (high functioning autism.)  And I might have struggled through school almost failing.  But the blog I run and participation in social media always keep me up and about.  You always have to enjoy life!  And to never give up.  And I want to thank all of you out there for reading Geek Alabama!

Here are some of the things I like:

Favorite Movies: Star Trek; Star Wars; Twister; The Wizard of Oz; Avatar; Big Fish; The Incredibles; Big Hero 6; Despicable Me; Documentary Movies

  1. Love your blog! I too love weather watching! It’s a real plus to live in Oklahoma where we have tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, ice, snow, and even earthquakes! I grew up next to the train tracks and loved watching them pass by. I love animals too. I rehabilitate orphaned and injured wildlife for our county. It’s nice to meet you…

  2. Thank you! I have enjoyed reading about Daisy the Deer. Yeah I am geek in many things including weather, trains, cooking, etc. That is why this blog is changing names April 1st to Geek Alabama. I am very happy that this blog has done very well.

  3. Star Wars, Star Trek and Avatar, eh? Man, a man after my own heart. Anywho, if this stuff about being a road geek is true, you’re gonna love my review of Two-Lane Blacktop next week (it’s a 1971 road film). If you haven’t seen it already, you HAVE to check it out. It features a young James Taylor and Warren Oates.

  4. Thanks for following me back on Twitter! That’s why I came to check out your blog. I’m impressed by all the social media you have listed here. I’ll follow the ones where I think I can maybe do you some good, and I will definitely check our your Deviant Art page. I don’t interact over there, but I am always looking for shareable art that I can use without asking and credit to the original artist. 🙂

Here is how I found you. I use “who to follow” on Twitter routinely to search for bloggers, geeks, and bloggers in adjacent states and big Southern cities. You popped up in the search at some point in the last week or two. I went oh, hey! Geeks! and Alabama! Yay! So I followed and hoped you would follow me back. (I can only carry unfollowers for a few weeks — managing my @Sourcererblog twitter account for growth, so every month or so, I get to the point where I just have to unfollow my unfollowers. Otherwise, the account stops growing). Anyway, I am very happy you followed back and that your blog is on WordPress, beacause that means easy blog notifications.

I know a ton of bloggers. If your blogging game involves making connections and thinking of the blogosphere as a subculture and finding groups of bloggers to interact with and such, it might be good we met 🙂

Constructive criticism on your blog. It loads really slowly. If I hadn’t wanted to check it out and leave you an about page comment, I might have clicked away, is how slow it is. I think it is your background image causing it. Slow page loading loses you readers.

Ok. Going to explore your other social media now 🙂

  5. Thanks, I have followed back on your site as well. Check out my Deviant Art page and enjoy my road drawings! Yep, I am one of the biggest bloggers/writers with a geeky/nerdy vibe in the southeastern USA. I have also made many connections, but somehow I am still unemployed. Yep, that sucks.

As for the front page loading, I am just stuck with this theme until I get employed somewhere and get some funding. It’s not the background image, and it loaded for me in a good time, about 5 seconds. I can’t afford those premium themes and can’t afford to move to self-hosting. I like how I set up the bottom where my links to my most popular posts and my About.Me is featured on every post, I have not found a theme that can support that other than the current one. So the Twenty Eleven theme stays until I get the money to make the move.

    Thanks for visiting Geek Alabama!

  6. The loading thing may have been something with my computer then. Just shared it because it’s the sort of thing I would want to know.

I’m in the same boat. I have zero money to spend. I use Twenty Eleven for my personal blog, too. I think it’s an awesome theme. I don’t use about.me, though.

    Nice chatting 🙂

  7. You know what, Nate? You’re someone who I respect and can relate to at times. Why, you have the same first name as one of my classmates in high school But even though I never met you in person, I prefer you to that other Nate because I have more in common with you. One example is that you’re a nerd and geek. And I have a thing for certain nerds and geeks.

Another example that I’m like you is that I have a things for animals. In fact, I’ve had that since childhood.

I do like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Legend of Korra but not as much as the latter’s prequel.

No offense since you like those three other programs that you mentioned here but I really dislike them with Family Guy being the hardest for me to handle and PAF (Phineas and Ferb) being the easiest for me to handle. If they interest you for real, then more power to you.

    Well, gotta go.

  8. Pardon me but I have these questions to ask you:

    1. Do you have your own vehicle?

    2. Can you drive it all by yourself?

    3. Do you have your own home?

I asked you those questions because my brother, who’s the same gender as me but four years younger than I am, unknowingly inspired me to ask you them. You see? He’s like you in that he has autism and none of those questions apply to him. And here are how he’s autistic:

    1. He dropped out of college.

    2. He still owns and plays with true toys despite being an adult.

    3. He still dabbles in teenage stereotypes even though he graduated from high school long ago. One example is that he flirts with gals like what a jock does.

    4. He depends on orange juice to help him drive, which is really strange.

    5. He depends on me like a crutch. One example is that he needs me to drive him to places like the only place he works at work and theaters so that he can watch more than one movie he likes.

    6. He doesn’t watch much educational television.

    7. He has a habit of recording too many things on the Dish Network.

    8. Most of the things that he watches is mind-closing content.

    9. He obsesses over dinosaurs, comedy, pleasure, and, most of all good-looking gals who are celebrities.

    10. He refuses to get more jobs nowadays.

    11. He depends too much in collecting aluminum cans and bottles to help him get money even though that isn’t enough to earn him much moolah.

    12. He thinks that he’s a spy and a secret agent. One example is that he flashes his homemade and unprofessional badge at whoever offends him in public as if he’s a policeman threatening to arrest a criminal.

    13. He’s very stubborn to my mom and I.

    14. He can’t seem to get over any problems that he had in the past.

    15. He thinks that a spy organization he claims to work for is real. And he calls it the OSS, which I’m guessing is the abbreviation for “Organazition of Security Spies.”

    16. He believes that the supposed boss of that secret agent company is an African American man whose name is Fred Wilson.

    17. He usually goes to sleep late all to his habit of staying up past his proper bedtime by watching as many things that he recorded on TV.

    18. He obsesses over impressing people with his Fonzie-like behavior.

    19. He sets up gaudy displays during every week of Halloween.

    20. He doesn’t help out much around the house that he and I live in.

    21. My mom told me that he’s still like a nine-year-old.

I guess that’s all I can come up with for now. But I am honest about what I told you about my only sibling who’s male. You, on the other hand, seem to be more mentally mature than him. One example is your ability to make this website, which he doesn’t have.

Anyway, feel free to respond however you want to me.

  9. Hello, I do not own a vehicle and use public transportation. But, I have driven a car and have a driver’s license. I do have my own apartment if you call that a home. Anyways, those are some interesting things you listed about your brother. I sometimes do things you listed like staying up late, but most of the things you listed I never do. I can tell I am more mature than your brother, and I am glad you visited Geek Alabama. Thanks for the comment!

  10. HI, Nate. I was the Mysterious One. But now, I decided use my real first name here, especially since you’re not afraid to use your real full name and show how you look like int his website of yours.

Since it’s Christmas, I give you one of my e-mail addresses, which is this:

    [email protected]

Another thing that I’d like to tell you is that my overall nationality is native to the Asia. And so, I pretty much live up to the fact that that continent favors nerds and geeks more than any other place on Earth does.

Well, happy holidays, fellow nerd and geek. And feel free to e-mail me at one or both of my e-mail addresses.

  11. Nathan, your blog will soon be added to our Actually Autistic Blogs List (anautismobserver.wordpress.com). Please click on the “How do you want your blog listed?” link at the top of that site to customize your blog’s description.
    Thank you.
