Crowdsourcing Mornings: KOI – Television Pilot

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

KOI follows the misadventures of four Asian American roommates (RJ, David, Jihoon, Will) in their mid-twenties learning to work hard and play harder.

In this pilot, the gang gets into a predicament the day of Will’s birthday bash, and through a series of twists, turns, spilt boba, and a near death experience, the boys’ lives are forever changed as they each learn something new about themselves and grow up… just a little.

KOI explores coming of age after coming of age. It’s about kids of immigrants struggling to meet cultural expectations and familial pressures that have affected every decision they’ve made. But in spite of that, it also depicts that doing all of this alongside supportive friends makes it possible for one to pave their own path.

I wanted to bring to life the world my friends and I have experienced so far as young adults. The show therefore also explores topics of unconventional career paths, dating, the immigrant experience, mental health, and pursuing the American dream- all of which I’d love to see more of on screen.

KOI is fast paced and doesn’t stay anywhere too long… just like your twenties should be. It’s a comedy primarily executed by clever/witty dialogue and wacky shenanigans that the guys get into. At the core of each episode, there is meaningful drama and life lessons about romance, career, and friendships. What would post grad life be without any mistakes?

Visually, we’re drawing from sitcoms such as New Girl and Modern Family. Both have a lighthearted and colorful aesthetic with dynamic camera movements and editing that highlight comedic actions and reactions. I also love how they employ the use of multiple storylines that tie together at the end of each episode.

As of May 26th, this project has raised $23,500 of their $22,000 goal.  This project has 1 days left to raise as much as it can.  For a pledge of $15, you will get a social media shoutout.  For a pledge of $50, you will get a early access screener.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rjsiu/koi-television-pilot?
