Crowdsourcing Mornings: Some Kind Of Heavenly Fire

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Letter from the Producer

As Producer on a project your roles are many, finding the story, perfecting the script, working with the director, cast and crew…but one of the biggest is providing the financial means to get the project made. So it’s only right that this appeal for your hard-earned dollars comes from me.

I came to this project by happenstance. I joined in 2021 a screenwriting accountability group of which Director Eric happened to be apart, from the first day he shared his logline, I knew it was something special. Many producers talk about reading (or hearing about a story) and it makes their hair stand up: this was mine.

So I played the long game, and eventually shelved my own projects to work on the critical mission of getting Eric to trust me with his. Almost troublingly deferential, Eric agreed to let me in despite my lack of experience. And in February 2022, we officially began what has now become a years-long journey. So far we’ve spent $1000s of dollars of our own money, casting, traveling to Detroit, working with lawyers and accountants to run this “business” the official way. And now, it’s time, after many months of preparation (and a feature I produced in-between) to begin filming.

Our plan is as follows: we are block-shooting the script, that is, all the locations at once, rather than in sequential order. Block-shooting allow us to complete roughly 70% of production by April, leaving the big summer scenes for, well, the summer. We also only have to fly out our Los Angeles talent, actor Gregory Thompson (black-ish, ALL AMERICAN, MONK) to Detroit once. Other than Greg, all talent is from Detroit. If you know me, it will be of no surprise to you that though I am beginning this campaign, I have already taken these days off, I have bought my flight and whether this is campaign is funded or not, we will begin filming the last week of March.

The story of Some Kind of Heavenly Fire is thoughtful, innovative, and moving. Had I any more finances to invest independently in this project, quite frankly, I already would have, which is why I have no qualms about using my network to finance a project that I truly believe in and that I believe will recoup our investment and more.

I am forever grateful to Eric for allowing me to join him on this ride, it has changed my life and I sincerely believe it will change the lives of everyone who is part of it, too.

So please consider generously donating to help us reach our goal. I promise you you won’t regret it.

To the stars, Jas
