Crowdsourcing Mornings: Donuts For Everybody

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Last June, at the end of a particularly heavy news week, I thought I’d get my family some treats. I went to my local bakery, bought a dozen donuts and carried them home. On my way back home I dropped one off at my neighbor’s house. Doing that made me think I’d like to share the remaining donuts with my friends on Twitter. So I posted this:

Some people took me up on the offer and before you know it, I was neck deep in paper collage donuts. The orders started out simple enough with “strawberry glazed donut” and “chocolate old fashioned donut” but they soon became more challenging with “raspberry filled bat donut” and “anthropomorphic death by chocolate donut”.

I was experimenting with paper collage and having a lot of fun trying to fulfill the requests. I started tagging the illustrations #DonutsForEverybody.

Since then I’ve done two more “Donut Days”, plus one day where I caught up on all unfulfilled orders. By Christmas 2022 I had made 72 donuts (viewable by searching for #DonutsForEverybody on Twitter) and fielded more than a few requests to purchase the original illustrations.

I’m unaccustomed to selling my art and, in all honesty, doing so feels a little at odds with the spirit of the whole thing. That said, everyone’s request for an art book collection has fired my imagination and I want to do this as a Kickstarter. It just feels right.

The “Donuts for Everybody!” book will contain the 72 donuts done as part of the original project as well as the dozen #TwelveDaysOfDonuts kids’ book inspired donuts I completed for the holidays.

As of January 27th, this project has raised $11,500 of their $10,000 goal. This project has 9 days left to raise as much as it can. For a pledge of $10, you will get one digital book download.  For a pledge of $25, you will get one physical book.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jerroldconnors/donuts-for-everybody?
