My name is Caroline Schiff and I am a photographer and art director. I have been shooting professionally for about twenty years. My photography has always focused on women. You can see more of my work here.
In 2013 and 2016, I came to you on Kickstarter to help fund the Sanctuary Stories photo project, and reached my donation goals successfully both times.
Since then, I have continued to shoot professionally, and work on personal projects when I can. During the pandemic, I created The Oakland Project, a photo and interview series about the people of Oakland, California.
Now I am launching a new photo project: American Woman, a photo collection celebrating the many faces of the American woman.
Why A Photo Series About American Women?
Being an American woman is increasingly complicated. In the last few years, many of our rights have been eroded. Like taking away the right to end a pregnancy. Or, the right to marry whom we wish, regardless of sex or race. Even the right to vote freely and without obstruction.
And, despite the fact that the 2020 census showed that the US is more racially and ethnically diverse than before, many still want to believe this is a country of white people. That is simply no longer the case.
I want to show what the American woman actually looks like.
What Will The Project Be?
I want to show a cross section of American women: all ages, occupations, sexual orientations, ethnic, racial, religious and tribal backgrounds.
I will choose as many women as I can to represent a wide swath of womanhood in America. Each woman will be shot in a beautifully lit, studio setting. The resulting images will appear on a website dedicated to the images and stories, similar to the The Oakland Project.
The American Woman project will be shot in the San Francisco-Bay area, the reason being that California has one of the most diverse populations in America.
As of January 17th, this project has raised $200 of their $2,800 goal. This project has 13 days left to raise as the $2,800 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $20, you will get one print.
