An Asian immigrant father struggles to protect his family at all cost, amid the peak of the pandemic.
A Chinese immigrant single father Jiang, who works as a delivery driver in Los Angeles during the pandemic, confronts discrimination and hostilities towards Asians.
Anxious and irritated, he swears to defend himself and his only son Lu, only to find himself trapped in the pitfall of anger and prejudice.
As a native originally from the city of Wuhan, China, I was quite traumatized in the disastrous events caused by the Covid outbreak and the following pandemic, amid economical and political turmoil in 2020. For quite a long time, I was hesitant to tell anyone where I was from, in fear of discrimination or demonization of my background. Many of my friends and family also had similar traumatic experiences from all over the world.
At the same time, I saw that ignorance and bigotry came from all sides, the majority and the minority, the insulters and the insulted alike. It seems to me that Covid-19 works like a test kit, through which our humanity as a whole is tested positive of viruses such as assumptions, prejudice and hatred. To some point, none of us are immune to these real diseases — we all fall short of our dignities and humanity in the face of stress and confusion. The ones that really got hurt are the truly innocent and the future of us: our children.
The story of this short film came into being on July 4th, 2020 in Los Angeles. It leads us to a close observation of people’s reaction to the disaster, from an Asian father and son’s perspective, one that I could provide with authenticity and honesty.
