First and foremost, we should talk a little bit about safety. While the hobby isn’t particularly dangerous, it’s still possible to injure yourself if you’re not being cautious. To set up your railway, you’ll be doing a bit of simple carpentry and working with electronics. This means you’ll be working with cutting tools and electrical wiring that could potentially cut or shock you. You should always have safety goggles or some other form of eye protection when cutting materials. Protective gloves may even be a good idea to resist abrasions or shocks from the wiring. In some cases, you may even need to use power tools or solder your models, which can result in greater injuries if you aren’t taking the necessary precautions.

Picking Models

The most important thing beginners should know about model railroading is what models they’re going to pick and the scale they will use. Nothing would be worse than buying all your supplies and models, only to realize they have mismatched sizes. Before you start looking at models, take some time to learn about the different model train scales. The most commonly used scale is the HO scale; if you want to look for secondhand parts, you’ll have an easier time using this scale since there’s more of it.

Plan Your Layout

The other important aspect before you get started is to plan out and have an idea of what kind of space you have to work with. You’ll need a large, flat surface to lay your railroad out upon. Many people typically invest in a large table to place in their basement or garage, where open space is often the most plentiful in the home. If space is limited, you may consider selecting a smaller model of train to make the most of your space.
