The Good Citizen is a photobook that explores how American society came to be what it is today. Who was freely invited into this space and who wasn’t? In what ways are the ripples of our past seen in our present? How can we engage more honestly with our history?

Exploring what it means to become American has been the focus of my work for the past eight years. It has introduced me to hundreds of people, taken me to dozens of states and is now coming together in The Good Citizen, coming out this fall with publisher GOST.

The Good Citizen does not pretend to provide answers. This is not a polemic, a textbook or a political tract. Rather, it is a series of images and essays that seek to provoke thought and conversation around the complicated nature of American identity.

The book moves from an attempted attack on a community of Somali Muslims in Kansas to an evening with Trump in the White House Residence. From the experience of the people forced into Japanese-American internment camps in WWII to a thriving community of Iraqi Yazidis who moved to Nebraska after serving as US interpreters. From the streets of Ferguson, with those protesting the killing of Michael Brown, to a search for the perpetrators of a mass lynching in Georgia.

The work looks at the winners of beauty pageants in immigrant communities, and considers how Miss Arab USA and Miss India Florida stand in contrast to the “white” requirement of US naturalization law that existed until the 1950s. We look at the legacy of settler colonialism through the lineage of Tom White Shirt, an Arapahoe boy who survived the Sand Creek Massacre. And we explore both how border policy has pushed migrants into deadly desert crossings, and how the children of immigrants assimilate their thoughts and dreams through language of both their families and their communities.

As of May 23rd, this project has raised $13,000 of their $18,732 goal. This project has 17 days left to raise the $18,732 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $57 you will get one signed book.  For a pledge of $94, you will get one signed book and one original polaroid.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gblimitededitions/the-good-citizen-by-benjamin-rasmussen?
