Crowdsourcing Mornings: The Nerve! Conversations With Movement Elders

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

The National Council of Elders, a group of elders representing almost every major U.S. social movement of the 20th Century, is developing a podcast series to share stories and reflections based on our collective work for nearly a century of active engagement in nonviolent struggles for peace and justice. We need your support for the telling and spreading of these transformative stories.

The Nerve! Conversations with Movement Elders is slated to be a series of podcasts where we will hear from people who’ve been instrumental in transformative efforts to create a more democratic, loving country; these are organizers and activists whose life work has included being part of the first Truth and Reconciliation process in the U.S., founding No More Deaths on the US Mexico border, defining cultural organizing before the term existed, organizing with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), creating Southerners On New Ground, running the Highlander Center and fostering popular education strategies through Freedom Schools, shaping our understanding of the importance of Black land retention and land trusts, sharing indigenous wisdom through Tewa Women United and so much more. These are conversations you will want to hear!

To date, The Nerve! has been developed with support from the Southern Movement Media Fund at Press On, and the We Shall Overcome Fund at the Highlander Center. A team of volunteers, partners, and paid producers has worked together to record high-quality interviews with the elders. Now, we need your help to get these stories out into the world. Our advisors on this project include members of On Being, Country Queers, and The View from Somewhere.

Your financial investment in the production of The Nerve! helps cover the labor and technical costs of making each episode, and launching it. We’ve conducted the interviews, and now it’s time to edit and craft each episode, which have an estimated cost of $1,000 an episode. Our fundraising goal is $13,500 initially, which covers the production of 12 episodes plus the fees and costs of crowd funding. There are more elders to interview, so additional funds raised through this Kickstarter will go towards future interviews and episodes of The Nerve!

The Nerve! will feature interviews from the National Council of Elders.  They include: Joyce and Nelson Johnson, Greensboro, NC, Suzanne Pharr, Little Rock, AR, Mandy Carter, Durham, NC, Zoharah Simmons, Gainesville, FL, Kathy ‘Wan Povi’ Sanchez, San Ildefonso Pueblo NM, Catherine Meeks, Atlanta, GA, Aljosie Aldrich Harding, Atlanta, GA, Candie Carawan, New Market, TN, and John Fife, Tucson, AZ.

As of December 21st, this project has raised $10,500 of their $13,500 goal. This project has 9 days left to raise the $13,500 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $25, you will get one thank you message.  For a pledge of $50, you will get one signed postcard.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ncoe/the-nerve-conversations-with-movement-elders?
