According to research, many graduate students don’t know what to expect when writing their dissertation or thesis. These strategies are offered by Dr. Ken Oldfield (professor emeritus, University of Illinois, Springfield) along with tips and tricks on how to manage it. Three UNL graduate students have shared their advice with us after they’ve completed a dissertation or thesis. Plan early.
Start planning early, no matter if you are writing a thesis and a dissertation. Start by writing down your ideas in a notebook. This will help you keep track of them. You should enroll in courses that are compatible with your interests and the instructor or subject matter. Choose writing assignments that will help you build your dissertation. You can plan strategically and create a “research flow” by using seminar research papers. This will allow you to define your research interests, expand your work, and possibly even make a dissertation topic.
Choose your adviser wisely.
Oldfield recommends that you choose an adviser who is known for helping people get through.
A thesis adviser or dissertation advisor should be attentive to your requirements, deadlines and you. You want someone who is able to understand the process and communicate expectations clearly. Your adviser should be someone with experience. This means that you may not want to choose someone new to campus. Advisors who have been readers on other dissertation committees are likely to be faculty members.
Be careful when choosing your supervisory committee.
Usually, there are three to four faculty members who serve as dissertation supervisors. Consider people who have a reputation for helping students graduate and those who are good at working with colleagues. Nathan Palmer, who just completed a master’s in sociology, said that a well-designed committee that compliments your skills and abilities makes the process much easier.
How do you recognize these people? Learn to get to know your professors. To understand the research areas of your professors, attend research colloquia. Engage with your professors and take classes. Learn from them. Talk to graduate students. It is best to ask your advisor for help in choosing your committee.
Be wise when choosing your topic.
These three words will help you focus when choosing your dissertation topic. Focus. Concentrate. Limiting the scope of your research will save you considerable time and effort. Choose a topic that is manageable. Your dissertation is a large and important project that will take you many years to complete. Your adviser can help you narrow down your topic so that you don’t stay in graduate school for more than twenty years.
Oldfield recommends that you choose a topic that you love and hate. Oldfield explains that no matter what subject you choose, you will eventually hate it. It will become easy to stop working on a boring question.
Regular meetings should be scheduled with your adviser.
Keep in touch with your adviser, and seek out his or her advice whenever possible. Your adviser will have a wider view of your topic and the thesis/dissertation process than you do, so it will help keep you on track. Plan ahead to ensure you both get the most from your meetings. Make a list of questions or topics that you would like to discuss before each meeting. Also, make sure you have an agenda.
Notes: Send your adviser an email with a summary of the discussion after the meeting. Your adviser may have multiple advisees, so it is not unreasonable to expect them to be able to recall everything discussed in each meeting. You can email your adviser a summary from your meeting. Make sure you keep a copy for your records. This will ensure that you are both on the same page.
Keep copies of all documents.
Students kept duplicates of their dissertations in the freezer in case of an emergency. Although this may seem a bit extreme, it is a good idea to keep copies of your chapters in multiple places such as an external hard drive or flash drive.
Carolyn Brown Kramer is a UNL psychology graduate who explains why it is important to keep feedback from your adviser or committee. She says that they may expect to see comments from earlier drafts integrated into newer versions. It’s also beneficial to keep old drafts for the possibility of being asked to add something again.
Ask for help.
Jennifer Overkamp, who earned her doctorate last December in English, strongly recommends the UNL Writing Center at Andrews Hall if writing is a problem. It’s free, staffed with graduate students (some of whom are writing their dissertations), and they can assist with any stage of the writing process. Overkamp found that the Writing Center kept her focused and motivated. She needed to make sure she had completed something before she met with a tutor.
Dissertation support groups are a great way to keep your mind clear, get feedback, and give encouragement. Talking to someone can help you overcome writing blocks, personal or professional difficulties, and even discouragement.
