Logline: An encounter with a $100 bill forces a disabled man to reconsider his toxic ideal of self-sufficiency. Eventually, everyone realizes that self-sufficiency is a joke; it just happens a bit sooner to some people.
ACT OF GOD is a short dramatic comedy about one disabled man’s single-minded pursuit of independence and how it goes very, very wrong.
ACT OF GOD follows Stuart, a disabled man in his mid thirties as he tries to exert some control over his chaotic life. It opens as a new home health aide, Paul, wakes Stuart up and gets him ready for the day. Over the course of their morning together, Paul attempts to broach a few uncomfortable subjects: did Stuart schedule someone to help him back into bed tonight? Is he finally going to get his chair fixed? Stuart deflects these questions and heads to work in his wheelchair, blocking out the conversation with a self-help audio track in his earbuds.
His ride to the office is interrupted by the discovery of a $100 bill lying in the middle of the road, abandoned. Because he can’t pick it up on his own, he simply leaves it on the pavement and continues on. After a long, strange day at the office he heads home to find the $100 bill still in place, waiting for him. It flutters away as soon as he moves towards it, leading him on a chase that eventually destroys his wheelchair and forces him to reconsider his toxic ideal of self-sufficiency.
For people with disabilities and their families, the ACT OF GOD will feel both familiar and new. While the emotions explored will hopefully resonate with their experience, the tone will be active and visceral, a far cry from the typical depiction of disability as a quiet, home-bound, tragic existence. The importance of this cannot be overstated. For many kids and young people with disabilities, this will be the first time they’ve seen a life like theirs portrayed, with vitality and humor, on the big screen.
With wages for essential home health care workers stagnant, diminishing voting rights for the disabled, and 10+ year waiting lists for essential services, stories about disability clearly need to be told. ACT OF GOD will open up these conversations by engaging with the disabled, film, and political communities of central Texas. We will hold local screenings and discussions to make people aware of the issues that affect disabled people and what our communities can do. We are currently in discussions with Austin-based breweries, businesses, and theaters who are interested in hosting these events, the proceeds of which will be donated to nonprofits that support disabled people living in central and south Texas.
As of July 28th, this project has raised $15,000 of their $13,400 goal. This project has 29 days left to raise as much as it can. For a pledge of $20, you will get digital access to the film.
