Hello!
I am Joanne, a professional Photographer and Mom to Jordyn who I raised alone as a single parent. Since the day she was born my goal in life was to protect and care for her and to help her become the best version of herself that she could be.
We lived a simple life in a beautiful place in Hawaii. I wanted her to grow up being active and playing outside and enjoying nature. We spent most of our time at the beach or riding bikes or skating at the local skate park.
She became enthralled with skateboarding and just before she started high school we moved to Encinitas, California which is the hub of skateboarding. When we enrolled her in 9th grade the counselor asked what college she was going to and what career she wanted to do. She didn’t have any answers for that yet so she turned to me for help. I told her she could do any kind of work she wanted to do and that I just wanted her to to be happy.
While that was well intentioned, it didn’t give her much to go on. She asked how she could find out what different jobs were really like and that gave me an idea.
I thought if we could talk to 100 women to see just how they found a career that they loved it might help to inspire her and her friends to think about some of the options they could pursue.
That was how the idea for my book Love Your Work was started.
Since then, I have met with and interviewed women from New York to Hawaii and asked them how they found what they loved and what were some of the good and not so good things about what they do for work.
Since I am a Photographer I also created photos of each of them to include with their stories. I have now put these interviews and photos into a book.
I spoke with women in all kinds of fields like Entrepreneurs and Business women that own Art Galleries, Bakeries, Flower Shops and Restaurants. I got advice from women in male dominated fields like CEO’s, and Surgeons and Lawyers. I have spoken with Creatives in fields like Artists, Actors, Producers and Performers. I met with women who have created a new type of work or niche that hadn’t existed before like Social Media Influencers, Travel Bloggers and Sports Styling.
100 different women doing 100 different jobs and each of them has insightful ideas and words of wisdom from their experiences that they were happy to pass on and help the next generation of girls to find something they love to do.
I have spent the last few years working on this project and am excited that it is ready to share. In early 2020 I had a literary agent who was speaking with different publishing houses and then Covid hit. I lost my agent and decided that now I am going to self publish to get this book out into the world.
Since it is just over 400 pages in full color, it is very expensive to print. I could save a lot of money by sending it to China for production but I would really prefer to keep it printed here in the United States so am asking for help in getting that done. With pre-orders and Kickstarter donations I can put in a bigger order with the printer which reduces the costs significantly.
I would like to get this book into some schools and libraries as well so girls can read about these incredible women and their journeys to finding work that they love.
