Dictionary Story is a tale that celebrates the creative potential of the world’s most famous reference book. It is a story in which definitions from the dictionary come to life and meet. The story is told and illustrated by using over 230 of the dictionary’s own definitions.
For this new 20th anniversary print, which has been completely rewritten and redrawn, we are hoping to print at Nomad Letterpress (home of Whittington Press) in Cheltenham.
The previous Dictionary Story book and print were widely collected, finding their way into libraries such as the British Library UK, the Library of Congress US, Bibliothèque Nationale de France FR, Deutsche Nationalbibliothek DE, as well as museums like the V&A museum UK and The Getty Research Institute USA, MoMA NY and the Tate UK. The original version was soon out of print.
The idea of a fluid language has been explored throughout Winston’s 20 year practice and the project has taken many forms – including a full folded dictionary where he transformed the twenty volumes of the OED into a 80,000 folded page sculpture.
If the project is successful, this would also open the door to a stretch goal of free additional art prints and a new publication all together.
As of December 3rd, this project has raised $26,000 of their $10,709 goal. This project has 9 days left to raise as much as it can. For a pledge of $7, you will get a print at home postcard.
