It is the moral imperative of every person alive at this moment to take action on the climate crisis–to push our communities, governments, employers, and other companies to take bold and aggressive action against the tide of disaster, tragedy, and loss that is rapidly coming if we do not change course.
Mobilization is difficult. Climate change is a thousand different crises emerging across the world in ways that are difficult to understand and terrifying to contemplate. This project aims to provide people with insight into how large wildfires will increase in their community due to climate change and give them the tools to push their communities to action.
We built the first county-level map to show how climate change is increasing large wildfires in the U.S.
Working with John Abatzoglou, a climate scientist at the University of California-Merced, we developed the first U.S. county map of how wildfire risk is projected to change over the next 20 years. Leveraging data from his study Climate change presents increased potential for very large fires in the contiguous United States, we were able to create an interactive map for people to explore the frequency of very large wildfires in the near future. This map shows the frequency of Very Large Fires by county between 1971-2000 and what’s projected under our current emissions trajectory to occur by 2040. Explore it below or at ThisPlaceWillBurn.org. Very Large Fires are 12,000 acres or more and account for a majority of burned area in many regions of the US. They include the 2018 Camp Fire that burned 153,336 acres, resulting in $16.5 Billion in damages, the loss of 18,804 homes and other structures, and completely destroyed the town of Paradise, CA.
The change is dramatic, with many counties set to experience multiple very large fires every year. But building a map isn’t enough, we have to use this data to mobilize our communities to put pressure on the institutions that can drive change. Collective action starts with collective awareness, and we want to help people force collective awareness in these communities about the local impact of climate change.
