Tricks For Prepping A Geek’s Paradise That’s Ready For Disaster

Recent events have taught us one thing for certain: the world is unpredictable. Disease, extreme weather, volcanoes and earthquakes — there is always disaster on our doorstep. This is why it is important to prep in advance, so that if disaster strikes, you are completely ready.  Organize your supplies, sort out some entertainment and make sure that you have a way of communicating with the outside world. Then you will have geeks paradise that is ready for when you need it most.

Organize your geek den

Now is the time to start organizing your den or even creating a new one. The basement is often an ideal place to set up a paradise where you can hang out during times of disaster because it is generally dry and protected. Basement space is also often under-utilized — you could make it a great project whilst you are at home, to turn it into the ultimate geek cave. Firstly, make sure that you organize some heavy duty storage so that it is easy to find your collection of goodies and supplies. Then decide on a system to keep your things – perhaps you want to alphabetize your books, or organize your movies by genre? Make sure that you also set up a t.v. or gaming console and some comfortable seating in your den, and don’t forget the mini-fridge for the drinks and snacks too.

Stock up on supplies

In the past two months, there has been a 370% increase in the sale of jigsaw puzzles. That is the equivalent of 20 jigsaw puzzles flying off the shelves every minute. So if you are hoping to acquire some new games, puzzles and books etc to keep you entertained during a period of lockdown, make sure that you organize this well in advance. When it comes to organizing food and drink supplies, keep a stash of your favorite dried and canned goods and a way of cooking them. You would be surprised at the delicious meals you can prepare on a simple stove top, including simple southern classics like grits. You should also make sure that you have some basic survival supplies such as a first aid kit, water purifying tablets and blankets.

Get your tech ready

If you are preparing for a disaster, it is important to get your tech ready so that you can communicate with others. The recent Coronavirus situation has proven that having a good internet service isn’t a luxury – it is a necessity. When you are getting ready, make sure that your internet speed is able to cope with streaming. If your download and upload speeds are poor, then speak to your internet service provider to see if they can provide a better service. It might also be worth investing in a 4G router, so that you don’t have to rely on broadband.

You should also make sure that you have enough data on your contract if you are planning on spending large amounts of time online. When you are prepping, get all your tech ready so that it is ready to go. Have you got a spare charger for your devices? Have you got any devices that still rely on changing the batteries? Do you have a spare cell phone in case yours breaks? It is also a good idea to invest in a basic am/fm radio in case the internet and cell phone service is interrupted.

It is important to be prepared at home in advance of a disaster situation. Creating a geek’s paradise means you will have somewhere to sit tight until things get better.
