Crowdsourcing Mornings: Artemisia: The Original Painter of Women in Power

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

Please read our crowdsourcing guidelines at: https://geekalabama.com/media-kit-pr/geek-alabama-crowdsourcing-guidelines

Artemisia was a painter of passions; of rich colors and fraught moments; of women taking command of their own stories. She reversed the classical depictions of female characters in mythology, presenting them with agency, as the protagonists of their own narratives.

And she was the hero of her own story, too. Despite working in a male-dominated field at a time when women could not even legally buy painting supplies, Gentileschi created an independent life for herself as a stunning artist of unparalleled power and uncompromised vision. She achieved fame and fortune through her own work, as the one of the first women ever to support herself with her brush.

Gentileschi was one of the most skilled and original artists of her generation, but her work was largely forgotten for centuries. She was finally rediscovered by feminist scholars in the mid-20th century, and is now rightfully recognized as one of the most important Baroque painters, but her name is still not nearly as widely known as Caravaggio or Rembrandt.

This beautifully written and delicately drawn biography of Gentileschi  was originally written in French, and has yet to be introduced to the English-speaking world. But with your support, we can do so.

As of September 10th, this project has raised $23,700 of their $30,000 goal. This project has 7 days left to raise the $30,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $10, you will get one digital edition.  For a pledge of $25, you will get one hardcover edition.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/beehivebooks/artemisia-the-original-painter-of-women-in-power?
