Crowdsourcing Mornings: Candycars: Diecast Wooden Cars

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

You know we do, and you do too. That’s why we think you’ll be glad to hear the seed of this idea: Diecast little cars are a staple of every kid’s bedroom and toy chest, making frequent appearances on adult shelves, toy collection and as fun office decor too. What bugs us is that like any successful, long-running product, they’ve become commoditized.

Today you can buy tiny 2-inch long diecast toy cars for a buck at virtually any gas station. Of course, it’s not the price that bugs us the most, it’s the simple fact that the joy that comes with matchbox cars is gone. Those little guys are so often tossed around and forgotten, the magic disappears. This mass invasion is a far cry from the 1950’s when they were carefully crafted, and came in a box resembling a box of matches. Don’t even get us started on plastic “diecast-style” cars.

Our idea is to provide a bit of an antidote to that while still doing what we do best: wooden toy cars. So we set out to design a “Wooden Diecast” car. It sounds really simple but we banged our heads about for 2 years to be able to do this — make a cute, cartoonishly-proportioned wooden body with fun, splashy colors on a custom-designed diecast base. Screw it all together carefully, give it an adorable name and sell it for single digit dollars in the spirit of matchbox cars. Then we made more of them. And now we’re releasing it into the wild!

As of November 26th, this project has raised $23,000 of their $5,000 goal. This project has 9 days left to raise as much as it can. For a pledge of $6, you will get a surprise black bag.  For a pledge of $9, you will get one Candycar.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:
