Crowdsourcing Mornings: A Child of Galaxies – A Philosophical Picture Book

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

Last year a large percentage of successful picture book publications in Australia were about farts. This is not ideal.  My book is not about farts.  It’s a book about wonder, mystery, resilience and play.  It speaks about how we are made out of star stuff! It celebrates how beautiful that idea is and how much potential there is in being alive.  It looks at the shadows of life too and how this story of the planets and stars, which is our own story, can help us navigate through the darker parts of life and help us to find joy.

If you’ve had a conversation with me in the past 12 years, I probably brought up the fact that I would one day like to write books for kids. It wasn’t until I had three of my own kids that I thought of one that was actually worth writing.  I teach children for a living and one day at work, I asked myself, “What do you have to tell your own children about the world?” The answer to this question just came tumbling out of me. The poem ‘A Child of Galaxies’ was written right then and there. When I read it I said to myself, “There’s the book! This is what you have to tell your kids!”

What followed was creative highs, despairing cries of “Why did I ever think I was able to create a picture book!”, countless late nights, infinity cups of coffee, incessant questions from my kids of, “Where is the book you promised us?”, and a good dose of encouragement from my wife… until at last it was done!  I’m so happy with it and I want to get it out into the world and share this simple offering of wisdom with your family.  This first edition of the book will feature full color gouache paintings, matte paper and a hardcover design with gold foiling.

As of November 8th, this project has raised $7,100 of their $5,091 goal. This project has 12 days left to raise as much as it can.  For a pledge of $18, you will get one hardcover book.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:
