Crowdsourcing Mornings: Solo: The First Open Source FIDO2 Security Key

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

We’re incredibly excited to announce Solo, the world’s first open source security key that supports the newest FIDO2 standard for secure login!   Secure login is for people who want to be protected against phishing, account takeover, and other online attacks – basically for anyone who uses Google, Facebook, Dropbox, Twitter, Github… Let us guess: you’re one of these people? Great, then Solo is for you, and will help you stay protected! In making Solo, our biggest dilemma has been “how can we make secure login more personable and accessible to everyone?” The answer was astonishingly easy: colors! (Though we’re still wondering why you can’t choose your color when you buy other security keys.) We’re going to add colored silicone cases to Solo, starting with black & white cases, and with your support we want to unlock more and more colors.

Our new Solo security keys work seamlessly on many services, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, Github, and many more. Because Solo supports the new FIDO2 standard, you get the strongest secure login, with protection against phishing, account takeover, and other online attacks. And it’s incredibly easy to use and consistent across all sites: when you login, after username and password, you plug Solo in your computer and just press its button to get access.

Open source at their core, our keys are verified, trustworthy and hide no secrets. Well, except one: a master secret is safely stored and protected by the Solo secure processor, so that only you can log in, of course!  Solo and Solo Tap come with a colored, sleek (and grippy!) silicone case, that you can match with your style, and even change to fit your mood. Solo boasts a tactile button for physical feedback, multi-color LED light to indicate secure login, and most importantly no battery! So it’s always available and ready.

As of October 20th, this project has raised $92,000 of their $5,000 goal. This project has 5 days left to raise as much as it can. For a pledge of $14, you will get one Solo.  For a pledge of $34, you will get three Solo’s.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:
