This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.
The Mylo™ Driver Bag is the world’s first commercially available product made from Mylo, a new sustainable material made from mycelium, the underground root structure of mushrooms. The unisex tote represents the future of accessories, combining innovative and cultivated materials with high-quality design. Mylo is a modern take on leather grown from mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms. Mycelium grows underground in soil. It forms vast networks of threads that help recycle organic matter on the forest floor while providing nutrients to plants and trees. The threads interweave and self-assemble into a 3D matrix that can spread for miles.
Mylo looks like hand-crafted leather and shares the same warm touch and suppleness – and because we control the growth environment and process, we’re able to manipulate the material’s properties and make each Mylo™ Driver bag truly one-of-a-kind. Our friends at Ecovative pioneered this mycelium fabrication technology, which literally grew out of the great work they’ve been doing in creating soft flexible foams. We’re optimizing this technology to produce commercial-ready Mylo™ material and bring products to market that consumers will love.
Mylo is created by combining mycelium cells with a substrate of corn stalks and nutrients. Over 10 days the cells grow into the substrate, creating an interconnected mass that can be made into almost any size. The result is a material that looks and feels remarkably like animal leather. Yet Mylo can be produced in days versus years, without the material waste of using animal hides or the toxic chemicals used in producing synthetic leathers. We’re pushing the boundaries of biomaterial development, and we’d love for you to join us on our journey. If you back the bag, you’ll be part of our experiment and we’ll look to you for your invaluable feedback. As we pioneer this field, we’re expecting the unexpected – so if anything unexpected happens to your bag, we’ll fix or replace it for up to five years.
As of September 24th, this project has raised $62,500 of their $40,000 goal. This project has 11 days left to raise as much as it can. For a pledge of $150, you will get one Mylo Puzzle Pouch. For a pledge of $400, you will get one Mylo Driver Bag. To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/boltprojects/the-mylo-driver-bag?
