The UN Special Rapporteur for Extreme Poverty paid a visit to the U.S. last year, drawing worldwide attention to his findings. One of the places visited was Lowndes County, Alabama. During the visit the UN Special Rapporteur said this was some of the worst poverty they have found in the modern world. The problem is some poorer black people do not have access to sewer services or can not afford to have a proper septic tank installed in their homes. The result is sewage spilling out into people’s yards.
