A few years ago, a popular juke joint called Gip’s Place in Bessemer, Alabama was shutdown by the Bessemer Police. Gip’s Place is an world famous local blues joint that has operated since 1952. Gip Gipson runs backyard blues parties every Saturday night in his backyard. It’s one of the last remaining juke joints in America! A filmmaker named Patrick Sheehan documented the entire ordeal during that rough time with Gip and his juke joint. And now, the film has premiered on TV! World Channel’s Reel South is airing the film called “Gip The Movie.”
Filmed and Directed by: Patrick Sheehan. In 1952, gravedigger by day and bluesman by night Henry ‘Gip’ Gipson opened a ramshackle backyard juke joint in Alabama. Once scattered across the rural South, juke joints have become relics of the past. In the Spring of 2013, Gip’s Place, the last juke joint in Alabama, was raided and ordered to shut down. Gip follows the battle to keep the blues alive.
