Ah, romance. Just what everyone needs…right? Wrong. The Valentine’s Day marketing machine and the quest for social acceptance can make “Singles Awareness Day” dreary or even cruel if you’re alone, whether by choice or by circumstance. It’s hard to see what else life has to offer when you’re bombarded with romantic comedies on TV, flowers, romance novels, and cutesy heart-shaped trinkets in the stores, and never-ending drippy advertisements and event announcements.

Fear not. You can be happy as a single on Valentine’s Day. Resist the pressure to couple up if it doesn’t happen to be the time for you, and celebrate the moment!

1. Fall in love with a new activity

Interested in taking up yoga? Want to learn how to dance ballet? Wish you could cook risotto? Challenge yourself to do something you haven’t done before or seldom get to do because of your schedule

2. Send love someone else’s way.

Studies show that kindness spreads, so start an epidemic. Give Valentine’s Day cards to those close to you, like your co-workers and friends, as well as those not so close to you, like the barista who serves you your coffee.  Not the Hallmark type? Volunteer locally and help those less fortunate than you. Seeing a face light up from your small gesture will fill you with love and make the world a better place.

3. Throw a party.

If gift-giving won’t go over with your group, invite your friends over to celebrate being fabulous and single, or even plan a dinner for all your single friends.

4. Help yourself

Finish (or start) something you’ve been meaning to tackle. Secure that promotion you’re after at work, get your finances in order, or rearrange your bookshelf by color.

5. Indulge in yourself

Cook your favorite meal, buy that bottle of wine you have been wanting to try, do whatever you want, be it pampering yourself with a lavish mani-pedi or staying home, ordering take out and binge-watching every movie your celeb crush has ever made. Or binge-watch a full season of your favorite TV show on Netflix. After all, you have no one to please but your own self.
