Crowdsourcing Weekends: Buddy Dog Collar, Trade School Book, Them’s Fightin’ Herds

Geek Alabama Crowdsourcing

This is Crowdsourcing Weekends! This post highlights three different crowdsourcing projects I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

Buddy. The Dog Collar Re-Imagined

Buddy is a fully integrated LED dog collar that’s connecting humans to their dogs like never before.  Pet ownership is a big responsibility, that’s why Buddy gives you confidence and peace of mind by monitoring your dog’s daily activity, by tracking their whereabouts in real-time via GPS, so you know where they are and what they are up to at the tap of a button.  Buddy utilizes high-output consistent LED lighting technology. It keeps your dog illuminated and visible from potential collisions, whether it’s with cyclists, cars, pedestrians or other dangerous hazards.

Through clever design and innovation, Buddy now replaces all of your existing collars and gadgets by consolidating them into one convenient and stylish package. Pet safety has never looked brighter!  Did you know over six million dogs are injured or killed on our roads each year? A large number of those accidents happen at night or at dusk where visibility is very low.  This alarming statistic is something that is often overlooked.  No matter if you’re walking them at night on lead, crossing the road or off-lead at the park. We can’t always trust the judgement of others, so why take a chance with your dog’s safety?

As of September 26th, this project has raised around $85,000 of their $100,000 goal. This project only has 59 days left to raise the $100,000 or it will not be funded!  For a pledge of $180, you will get one Buddy dog collar.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:

Trade School : Barter with your Brain Full

Trade School is a learning experiment where teachers barter with students.  Anyone can teach a class, and students offer barter items to meet the teacher’s needs. For the past seven years, over 30 chapters around the world have been coordinating local gatherings for exchange.  Since 2009, they’ve been teaching ourselves and learning from their elders using a barter system. They have been doing this in their own communities around the world, and they have helped each other open and adapt their ideas to their local contexts. Together, they will collate their stories and teaching tools into ONE book.

As of August 2015, more than 100 cities have submitted a request to open up a Trade School, and over 19,000 students and teachers have taught or attended a Trade School class somewhere in the world. In exchange for these classes, students have traded goods and services with teachers, but money has never exchanged hands.  Over the next year, they will gather stories and teaching tools that show how and why barter based learning has spread internationally.  They will share their experiences about creating alternative spaces for learning, their reasons for getting involved, how it has worked, and how it has failed in our local contexts. This is a book for learners, for educators, for builders of sharing economy platforms, and for the new economy, as the majority of organizers are under 30 years old, and want to write about the ways it has changed them and their surroundings.

As of September 26th, this project has raised around $5,500 of their $10,000 goal. This project only has 6 days left to raise the $10,000 or it will not be funded!  For a pledge of $10, you will get you name added to their website.  For a pledge of $15, you will get the digital version of their book.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:

Them’s Fightin’ Herds

Them’s Fightin’ Herds is a 2D PC (Windows, with Linux/Mac as stretch goals) fighting game with adorable animals in an original universe designed by Lauren Faust (producer and developer for “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”; creator, director and developer for “Super Best Friends Forever”). It is the spiritual successor to “Fighting is Magic”, with improved gameplay mechanics and graphics, an entirely new (and awesome!) dynamic music system, a graphic lobby, and a whole bunch of new features.

Mane6 (Hi, that’s us!) is the team behind creating this 2D fighting game where players can explore and do battle across the mysterious lands of Fœnum. They want to create a game that is fun and rewarding to play for all players across all skill levels.  Here are some of the gameplay features in Them’s Fightin’ Herds:

  • 4-button Fighting: A-Light, B-Medium, C-Heavy, D-Magic.
  • Magic System: Emphasize your character’s special abilities through a dedicated button and a unique resource.
  • Juggle Decay: Opponents become gradually heavier during a combo, but ONLY after the juggle decay bar is filled. This manages combo length without imposing a hard limit. In addition, filling the juggle decay bar prevents standing infinites by removing the opponent’s ability to remain standing for the rest of that combo.
  • Enhanced Super Attack: Spend an additional meter to add utility to your main super attack with effects that stay true to the characters’ unique personalities and talents!
  • Dynamic Music System: Rockin’ character themes that adapt in the heat of the battle makes every fight a treat to the players AND the spectators.
  • GGPO powered netplay for the smoothest possible fighting game experience.
  • Ranked/unranked matchmaking for quick and efficient fightin’.
  • Visual lobby which allows players to explore (read: goof around in) locations within the world of Fœnum with other players. Customize your avatar with cosmetic items you collect through exploration and single/multiplayer gameplay!

As of September 26th, this project has raised around $175,000 of their $436,000 goal. This project only has 26 days left to raise the $436,000 or it will not be funded!  For a pledge of $5, you will get a digital wallpaper.  For a pledge of $15, you will get a digital copy of the game.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:
