Sunday Discussion: Using GoFundMe To Buy Chicken McNuggets

Geek Alabama Discussion

On this Sunday Discussion, on a Tuesday, I wanted talk about how someone from East Alabama used GoFundMe, to buy himself a meal at McDonald’s.  Yep, you heard that right!  Michael Panik, who is a communications student at Jacksonville State University, set up a GoFundMe campaign to buy himself a 20 piece Chicken McNuggets meal at McDonald’s.  The reason why Michael came up with this crowdsourcing campaign, to show why some misuse these crowdsourcing sites for their own personal gains.

This is what Michael wrote on his GoFundMe page.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve wanted to do something truly great in life. Each human on this earth has potential for greatness; to achieve their goals. I am no different.

My name is Michael Panik, and I WILL devour a 20pc Chicken McNugget Meal from McDonald’s restaurant.

I understand the risks involved. I understand this is no small undertaking. I am, however, devoted to this concept, this one thought: twenty of the whitest, freshest, breaded chicken nuggets powering down my digestive tract at full force, followed by two large fries, and two ice-cold Coca Colas.

Some people call me crazy.

I just call them “chicken.”

And the crazy thing, the campaign was funded in 20 minutes.  This is what Michael wrote after being funded.

I just want to give a sincere thank you to all who have helped me along this journey. I’ve been seeing some truly moving articles going around about my experience so far and this is all overwhelming. No man is an island – I never could have done this without you all.Well, maybe I could have gotten a job and raised the money myself, but I never could have made it without working without you guys!

So, Michael went down to McDonald’s, got himself a 20 piece Chicken McNuggets, large fry, and a large drink, and ate it.  And here is a picture proving it!  He even ate the meal with the first donor who pledged to his campaign via FaceTime.

Sure, some have criticized Michael for making crowdsourcing sites like GoFundMe like a joke.  But most have praised what Michael has done, and he has brought attention to those few who misuse sites like GoFundMe.  If you want, you can still pledge to Michael’s campaign, all funds raised will go towards the Ronald McDonald House!
