This weekend in Gadsden on the Coosa River is the fourth annual Gadsden Habitat Dragon Boat Festival. This year, 28 teams have registered for the event. And funds raised will go towards the Gadsden–Etowah County Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes in the community. This year, the event kicks off at 8:45 am with the opening ceremony. The races will start at 9 am and last until a winner is crowned in the afternoon.
All the teams will compete in 46-foot authentic Chinese Dragon Boats in 250-meter races in either the competitive and recreational divisions. Each team will race twice, and the eight fastest teams will race in finals for each division. The top three teams will get medals, and there will be awards for best team spirit, best drummer costume, best decorated tent, and best team T-shirts. Other than the boat races, there will be other things you can do for the entire family!
There will be food concessions, kids activities including airbrush face painting and dragon crafts, a general marketplace, the JSU Tropical Breeze Steel Drum Band, and the Gadsden Line Dancers.
