Kickstarter Tuesdays: Jilia IoT Dev Kit / Ono Ice All-Natural Shave Ice Truck

Geek Alabama Kickstarter Projects

This week on Kickstarter Tuesdays, let’s talk about two more Kickstarter projects from Alabama that you need to support!

Jilia IoT Dev Kit for Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone Black

Jilia is a cloud-based platform and API framework that empowers developers to imagine, build, and expand the Internet of Things with a single, simple API framework. It’s the easiest way to get started exploring and developing the Internet of Things. It’s also the perfect platform to build new IoT products and Jilia has the scalability to support millions of users and devices.  The Jilia IoT Development Kit includes an add-on board that adds comprehensive IoT capabilities to your Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black. The Jilia IoT Development Kit includes on-board ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi* (BeagleBone only) so you can connect to hundreds of existing devices.

The add-on boards allow developers to build new IoT systems utilizing the new Jilia API. Jilia is a feature-rich, easy-to-use, and scalable dream-come-true for developers who create products and services for the Internet of Things.  Jilia makes developers’ jobs easier and speeds up product development. With the Jilia IoT Dev Kit, projects require fewer developers, less experience, and less overhead. Jilia can shorten your project time by as much as 80%! Projects that normally take 18 months to develop can utilize Jilia to finish the project in as little as 3 months. Jilia’s flexibility also makes it easy to integrate into existing products and services.

What’s so “easy” about Jilia?  Jilia allows developers to focus on a single development approach, regardless of the protocol used (e.g., Z-Wave, ZigBee, and Bluetooth). To the developer, Jilia treats all of these protocols the same. You don’t have to know these standards to use them! Jilia’s cloud eliminates the need for custom server software, infrastructure, or dedicated IT teams.  App, hardware, and software teams will all use the same APi to interact with Jilia. This can eliminate rework and provides a shorter learning curve.

Jilia can be used by beginners and experts! There are only a few hundred software developers worldwide that have enough real-world experience in ZigBee, Z-Wave, or Bluetooth to get a comprehensive IoT project launched from the ground up. For most companies (especially startups), finding and hiring these developers is not an option. Jilia will make your project so easy that nearly any developer can pull off complex projects.  The Jilia IoT Dev Kit is perfect for:

  • Developers without low-level code or hardware experience.
  • Seasoned experts who just want a faster and cheaper way to develop IoT products and services.
  • App developers wanting to control an ecosystem of devices.
  • Web developers without hardware or embedded experience.

As of August 4th, this Kickstarter project has raised around $6,000 of the $50,000 goal they need to be funded. And as you know in Kickstarter, a project is not funded until the fundraising goal is reached! This project only has 9 days left to raise the $50,000 or it will not be funded! For a pledge of $45, you will get one Jilia Dev Kit.  For a pledge of $100, you will get two Jilia Dev Kits.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:

Help Ono Ice All-Natural Shave Ice get a Truck

“Ono” means “delicious” in Hawaiian, and it’s the inspiration behind everything Ono Ice does. Syrups made-from-scratch with only fresh, natural ingredients. Unique flavors ranging from Blueberry Basil to Honeysuckle Pear to Vietnamese Iced Coffee. And ice so delicately shaved it literally melts in your mouth.  For the past 3 years, Birmingham native, Rebecca Davis has been operating Ono Ice as a pop-up shop with just a table, portable ice coolers, and hand-crank block ice shaver and making pop-up appearances at local Birmingham businesses like Bottletree, Lucy’s Coffee and Tea, Charm, and festivals like Secret Stages, Artwalk, and Sidewalk Film Festival.

With the help of the Kickstarter campaign, Ono Ice will be able to purchase a vintage RV or truck to be converted into a one-of-a-kind shave ice truck and be on the streets of Birmingham by next summer. Once we’re on wheels, Ono Ice will be able to bring all-natural shave ice to more locations in the Birmingham metro-area making it a summertime experience everyone in the city can enjoy. With more space to work in, we also be able to offer sugar-free flavors, more specialty shave ice desserts like Chamango, a mexican-style raspado made with fresh Mango and a spicy Plum flavored syrup, additional toppings like fresh fruit and mochi balls, and locally-made ice cream that can be added to your shave ice.

With generous help of family, friends, and Ono Ice supporters, Rebecca Davis has been able to get off the ground, buy basic equipment, and make pop-up appearances at some of Birmingham’s most beloved local businesses and festivals. Now, she needs your help to bring it to more people across the city, all summer long. Your funds will be used to help her meet her budget goals for purchasing a used truck and all necessary equipment to operate a mobile shave ice business. Including repairs, painting, and renovation of the truck to meet health code requirements, equipment such as a new electric shaver, freezers, and coolers, for hand-painted signage and a bitching sound system!

At the root of it all is a unique experience that she is excited to bring to Birmingham by next summer.  She loves the idea of being able to create something you can do every summer. A special thing or tradition you do with you family or friends. With your support, we can create a mobile Ono Ice truck that will become a Birmingham tradition for years to come!  She would love to have you join her in her mission to contribute to making Birmingham a great place to live and visit.  Please consider pledging today!  Thank you for your support!

As of August 4th, this Kickstarter project has raised around $5,500 of the $24,500 goal they need to be funded.
