We have talked about how the Canadian HitchBOT has hitchhiked across Canada and Europe with the kindness of strangers and the robot has done a lot of cool things! But sadly, us Americans don’t care some old stinking robot apparently, and only two weeks into a trip from Massachusetts to San Francisco, HitchBOT was abducted from a Philadelphia street corner and beaten until it died. The robot was then thrown into an alley like a piece of trash.
Here is HitchBOT’s last tweet announcing the end of the trip.
According to the HitchBOT creators, the robot’s trip came to an end last night in Philadelphia after having spent a little over two weeks hitchhiking and visiting sites in Boston, Salem, Gloucester, Marblehead, and New York City. Unfortunately, hitchBOT was vandalized overnight in Philadelphia; sometimes bad things happen to good robots. They know that many of hitchBOT’s fans will be disappointed, but they want them to be assured that this great experiment is not over. For now they will focus on the question “what can be learned from this?” and explore future adventures for robots and humans.
They have no interest in pressing charges or finding the people who vandalized hitchBOT; they wish to remember the good times, and they encourage hitchBOT’s friends and fans to do the same. Godspeed HitchBOT! I hope the creators will attempt to have HitchBOT go across the USA again, but this time stay out of the hoods in the northeast, okay!
