Kickstarter Tuesdays: Space Food Truck / MediaBit

Geek Alabama Kickstarter Projects

This week on Kickstarter Tuesdays, let’s talk about two more Kickstarter projects from Alabama that you need to support!

Space Food Truck

Space Food Truck is a tongue-in-cheek, cooperative, digital board game for PC, Mac, Linux, plus iOS and Android tablets. There are no card packs to buy, everything is yours out of the box, and it’s not a free to play game. Full games can take 1-2 hours, if you live that long.  Work together! Explore a procedurally-generated galaxy of 100 planets in search of ingredients, then scramble to the planet craving your dish to complete each objective. Finish every recipe before your ship falls apart to win.

You start by picking one of four unique jobs on the food truck: Captain, Chef, Scientist, or Engineer. If you have less than 4 players, you’ll get to control more of the crew (or all of it if you choose to play alone).  Each character gets their own small deck of cards and a unique job to do. Everyone will have to pull their weight if you want to win! Each turn you’ll add new items, ingredients, and special abilities to your character’s card deck. Choosing new cards wisely is critical to crafting recipes and surviving the escalating hazards of deep space.  They’ll have 3 difficulties to choose from: Rare, Medium, and Well-Done.

This beautiful hunk of junk is the Galaxy Gourmet food truck. You can visit each other’s quarters to pass along valuable cards or resolve time-sensitive emergencies. A few mission-critical items have a tendency to break down at the worst possible moments, like doors or life support, but think of all the money you saved buying used.  The game design is complete with a fully-functioning digital prototype. They’re currently in the process of implementing the artwork and effects, balancing the cards, and optimizing the user interface. Their target release window is around the end of 2015 for PC/Mac/Linux. After that, they’ll jump right into optimizing it for iOS and Android tablets.

A few months into production on Space Food Truck, they realized that they’d have to make some MAJOR cuts to the scope of this game in order to finish it within their means. Cuts like no online multiplayer, no custom music or sound effects, and a lot of shortcuts on art and animation. Then they came to the realization: this is exactly why people go to Kickstarter.  With your support, they can make Space Food Truck the right way. The way they dreamed it when they started this thing. They aren’t asking for the entire budget for this game, just what they’re lacking to make it truly awesome!

As of July 29th, this Kickstarter project has raised around $7,000 of the $35,000 goal they need to be funded. And as you know in Kickstarter, a project is not funded until the fundraising goal is reached! This project only has 7 days left to raise the $35,000 or it will not be funded! For a pledge of $15, you will get one copy of the game.  For a pledge of $75, you will get four copies of the game.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:

That’s right, and your children are right there with you. With all the metrics and tools to track and improve every aspect of our lives from fitness, to calories, even the steps we take. Shouldn’t we pay closer attention to the most important and irreplaceable part of our ENTIRE LIVES!?  The MediaBit tells you when the TV is on and how long it is on. Statistics are pushed to the MediaBit Website for you to view. You can remotely turn off the TV using a smartphone or a web browser.

Parents, you may want to influence the amount of TV or video gaming your child is playing each day or each week. The MediaBit will allow You to monitor usage through an app on your smart phone anywhere, any time. You can even program the TV to turn off according to your schedule.  Your child is smart, right?  They’ve accounted for that. MediaBit’s has a defense system, Tamper Detection! Let’s say little Johnny gets wise. He figures he’ll just unplug their Orwellian device. Well the MediaBit then sends a notification to your smart phone alerting you that the HDMI cables are disconnected or power is disabled. Tough love.

What you see in the pictures and the video is a functioning MediaBit prototype. With a functioning design, they are now gearing up for manufacturing.  They’ve already lined up manufacturing partners, but to make the MediaBit affordable, they have to bring the costs down by manufacturing a lot of them at once. And that’s where you can help make this project a reality!  Their funding goal represents the minimum amount they need to produce the first batch of MediaBits. If they are able to meet their funding goal, they will begin manufacturing and shipping the MediaBit starting in April, 2016.  They are still putting the finishing touches on the Smartphone Apps and Embedded Software for the MediaBit, but they have already received Hardware prototypes that are ready to go!

As of July 29th, this Kickstarter project has raised around $6,600 of the $6,500 goal they need to be funded. And as you know in Kickstarter, a project is not funded until the fundraising goal is reached! This project only has 24 days left to raise as much as it can! For a pledge of $59, you will get one MediaBit.  For a pledge of $115, you will get two MediaBits.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:
