Sunday Discussion: You Should Subscribe To The British Movietone YouTube Channel

Geek Alabama Discussion

Before the days of TV news, most people got news updates via a newspaper, or they got news updates in a local theater.  The ones doing most of the news updates in a theater was Movietone and the Associated Press.  And now both are releasing clips from their stories on YouTube.  The stories range from 1895 to 1986.  They were shot on 35mm film, and this global archive contains many of the world’s enduring images and is rich in coverage of news events, celebrities, sports, music, social history, science, lifestyle and quirky happenings. It was the first newsreel to include sound, the first to use color film, the first to break many exclusive stories, and is your first and last stop for newsreel footage.

There’s almost 100 years of footage they can upload to YouTube.  And I thought I would share some cool videos I liked from their channel.  How about some footage of the  Hindenburg Disaster in 1937.

How about a reel of the original opening of Star Wars!

How about the first ever Movietone in Britain!

This never happened!  The future town of Motopia!

Here’s one about the Italian Assassin!

Here is a classic remix and parody video about Hitler.

Here’s footage of Mount Vesuvius erupting.

And here is a report about the assassination of Martin Luther King.

You can find hundreds more of classic newsreels on their YouTube channel!  Learn more and subscribe at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHq777_waKMJw6SZdABmyaA
