This week on Music Thursdays, I wanted to feature two music related Kickstarter projects from the Gadsden Metro. First up, let’s talk about Craig Dobbins and his new album called The View From Here. He has been doing more than thinking. He has been writing and recording material for a new full-length album, called The View From Here. It’s all instrumental guitar, with a wide variety of music, both acoustic and electric, solo, and with some of his musical friends. You might say it takes you on a little journey.
He has also been writing out all the arrangements for a matching transcription book for you guitar players. And now, He is asking you to help him get The View From Here out into the world by pre-ordering on Kickstarter. To fund this project, he needs to raise $9,000, which will go toward pre- and post-production, recording, manufacturing/printing, and promotion costs. As of May 21st, he has raised $2,500 of his $9,000 goal and has 22 days left to raise the $9,000 or it will not be funded!

Now let’s talk about Thrift Store Symphony. Thrift Store Symphony is a feature-length, non-profit documentary film about thrift stores and thrift store culture. It’s the story of us, the way our consumer-culture world drives us to buy the things we don’t need, and get rid of what we have, even when it’s perfectly functional. They believe that you alone give value to an object, and truly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Beyond that, they want to remind people that you don’t need lots of money to have the things you want, just a little know-how, a little cash, some spirit, and a day at a few thrift stores.

To explore these ideas about thrifting and thrift store culture, they will be interviewing those who run, shop at, work at, and own thrift stores, to get to the very heart of non-profit retailers. Additionally, they’re taking a (roughly) two-week road trip in the summer of 2015 to nine different major cities in the Southern and Mid-Western United States, and visiting the thrift stores there. At each store they visit, they will find all the second-hand instruments, noisemakers, toys, pots and pans, etc. that they can use. Coupled with one instrument each of our choosing, a mobile recording rig, and a small bag of drum sticks, shakers, mouthpieces, and more, they will record one song at each store they visit. The result will be an album of pop-centric, fun music that upholds their ideals of junk and beauty.
Their $10,000 goal will go towards travel, post production, gear rental, and festival fees.
