Let me start by inviting you to sit down on my lap. Yes, this is Grandpa Nathan wanting to give some life advice to younger people. The life advice, how the Alabama Legislature is driving this state to bankruptcy and a government shutdown. Yes, our glorious legislature is doing some insane and crazy things this session. From that bill from Sen. Larry Stutts that would of repealed Rose’s Law, the law that protects a woman’s right to stay in the hospital for 48 hours after giving birth and giving women a right to know if their mammogram shows dense breast tissue, which can conceal or be an early sign of breast cancer. I can’t believe that seven other Republican senators co-sponsored that bill and I am glad this bill is dead!
Some other legislative bills that would make you think you were living in North Korea. There is a bill from Rep. Mike Ball that would limit the Attorney General’s Office from investigating those in the State legislature. All of this because the speaker of the house Rep. Mike Hubbard is facing a trial on 23 felony corruption charges, that has turned into a media circus. And there is another bill in the legislature that would allow some public works projects to be no-bid. Can you say money passing hands between those in power, I can!
If you think that is all the clowns down in Montgomery can do, you need to invest in more clowns! For starters, the corrupt legislators are wanting to transfer money from the state park system, and put it somewhere else in the general fund. The state park system makes their money from the fees you pay to enter a state park, from camping or staying in cabins or hotels, their restaurants, and golf courses. Yes, let’s shut down the state parks because our leaders think we should care more about prisoners then nature, what a smart move! Some in the tea party wacko group are grilling Governor Bentley who is talking about what would happen if this ultra cutting general fund budget passes the legislature.
I mean, the legislature has not come up with any other plan, and we are more than halfway through the session. The education fund is in good shape and is about to land on Governor Bentley’s desk, why are our clowns not working on solving the problems in the general fund. Are they dead set on this austerity general fund budget, and are waiting till the last-minute to pass it so the governor’s chances to veto it get smaller? That seems like what they are doing! And it’s not just the tea party wackos blaming others, Yellowhammer’s Cliff Sims went on a tirade against Governor Bentley over the cuts on state parks. Cliff, you need to stop drinking the tea party Kool-Aid and maybe you need to go back to civics school!
The governor is not doing scare tactics, he is just telling the truth! If the austerity general fund does pass, not only most state parks close down. Court systems will be strained, and be only open three days a week. People on Medicaid will lose assistance and those on dialysis will have to go to the ER. There will be less state troopers on the road, and some crimes and murders in rural counties will just go unsolved. Prisons will become more overcrowded, and those with mental disabilities will be in trouble. If these major cuts go through, those with intellectual disabilities, like me, will be in big trouble!
Basically, the state of Alabama is giving those with autism, Asperger’s, and other intellectual disabilities the middle finger, and saying “screw you.” We on the spectrum will not be able to advance, and will either be stuck at home, on the streets, or be planning their moves to other states, where the services are much better! Yes, I have Asperger’s Syndrome, and I still live in Alabama, where services and help for people like me are almost non-existent. And judging by what people are leaving me in the blog comments or on e-mail, it seems like I am not welcome in Alabama anymore.
How about getting a real job? No one’s going to just up and offer you one. Get off you’re a** and apply and talk to managers….and actually bring in a real resume not some crappy visual/video one. Life isn’t free, the rest of us work for what we have, do the same and stop asking for handouts.
Well look at your petition that will be going nowhere here in Alabama. Face it Yankee, the majority of people in Alabama could care squat about people needing mental health treatments, especially when the treatments come from the taxpayers. You need to realize something; most people down in the south are tea party supporters and wants most if not all taxes cut, even if that means the people suffer. Why not you go back up north where you came from? And keep that f***ing big government high taxes nonsense up there.
Yep, I have deleted these comments. And these comments show a trend here in Alabama. Many people just don’t care! They claim they are Christians and would care for others who need help. But when it comes to paying for it, they want their pocketbooks slammed shut! And would rather see people with disabilities on the street before they would pay just a little more in taxes to make sure no one suffers and everyone has a chance to succeed. That is the Christian way down here in Alabama!
Some in the legislature are proposing other ways to put money into the general fund. Like unearmarking money which goes to education. Yes, take money out of schools and put it into prisons, what a smart move! I don’t trust what the legislature would do with that extra money. Also, let’s just borrow more money. That’s right; we can’t do that anymore, you can only kick the can down the road so many times. So, what will happen next? I don’t know, but I have to believe that the results will be not pretty and downright ugly!

The only way fix this problem is to overhaul how taxes are collected in Alabama. No more large timber owners and land owners hardly paying any property taxes. No more out-of-state corporations hardly paying any state taxes. No more giving away tax money to lure business. No more high tax codes for the poor and low tax codes for the rich. No more refusing expansion on Medicaid and taking in more federal money then we send out. Nope, the best way to deal with a budget deficit is to increase the tax base. That is the only way, sorry if I burst your tea party collective bubble!
For starters, quit giving away the kitchen sink to lure jobs into Alabama. Let’s increase our tax base and show companies that Alabama has a robust infrastructure, good schools for the children, good healthcare for people and families, great recreational opportunities; and a well-educated work force. Companies today are not just looking for tax breaks. They want to move to places where the overall quality of life is great. And the demand for good quality of life will only grow as more Millennials take over head roles at companies.
If this state can show everyone that we are serious about properly taxing everyone the right way, then companies and people will want to live in Alabama! And the only way we can get serious on redoing the tax code is to rewrite the antique 1901 constitution that puts all the power into the hands of these clowns in Montgomery. Also, people in Alabama need to get smart when they go vote on Election Day. How about stop voting for corrupt people that use their office for their own gain and screw over the state? If Alabama is always second to last in every conceivable standard of living in this country, maybe we have a voter’s problem, not an elected official’s problem?
It’s time to elect people with a bit of common sense to run this state. But sorry, you Alabamians voted for these clowns until 2018. I guess you will get to watch the state slide into financial ruin! As for my situation, no one wants to hire me in Alabama, mostly because the few that have contacted me have said I think differently and I would not be a good fit. So, I guess disability here I come! And if that does not pan out, I will be forced to move to another state, where I will not be screwed around like what is happening to me here in Alabama now. There are 49 other states in America, and they would care more about people with intellectual disabilities then what Alabama does. In other words, soon Alabama could care squat about those with disabilities!
