Well, I want to interrupt our regularly scheduled post feed for some breaking news, Leonard Nimoy has passed away at age 83. Mr. Nimoy was best known for playing Spock in the original Star Trek series in the 1960’s. Nimoy passed away around 10:40 am Central time at his Los Angeles home from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Yes, Mr. Nimoy was a smoker, but he kicked the habit after the damage was already done.
Mr. Nimoy was born in Boston, and began acting at around age 8. He went on to serve in the US Army from 1953-1955 and returned to Hollywood where he had roles in shows like Rawhide, Bonanza, and The Twilight Zone. In the 1960’s, Gene Roddenberry created a new groundbreaking sci-fi series called Star Trek. Gene was impressed with the work Nimoy was doing on TV, so he casted Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, a half-Vulcan, half-human science officer on the USS Enterprise. NBC rejected the first pilot, and it forced Gene to re-write most of the script. That might have been a good thing, or Star Trek would not be as big as it is today.
After the re-write of the script, Spock was the only character to survive the re-write, and soon Star Trek would go on to become the iconic series it is today. Leonard Nimoy appeared in every episode of the original Star Trek series, he appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the first six Star Trek movies. It’s kind of ironic that we have a scene of Spock dying in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. What an emotional scene and funeral.
Leonard Nimoy did a lot more outside of Star Trek! He starred in other TV shows like Mission: Impossible, he also directed several Star Trek movies and others like Three Men and a Baby, and The Good Mother. Leonard Nimoy was also a writer and wrote two books called I Am Not Spock in the 1970s and I Am Spock in 1995.
Nimoy was also very active on Twitter on his @TheRealNimoy account. His last tweet was something special.
