This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.
They’re a group of Rutgers graduate students who are the founders of Phytosys LLC and the developers of Visikol. Initially, they had set out to create a clearing agent for plants to replace the toxic and highly regulated chemical, chloral hydrate in their plant biology lab. But along the way, it became rapidly apparent that this compound not only had great potential in academic research, but also created amazing cleared specimens that simply blew away everything else they could find. While other chemicals had degraded tissues and left specimens poorly stained, Visikol was able to produce brilliant works of art in an amazingly short period of time. They knew this could not remained confined in an academic lab.
Through launching TaxiClear they aim to take Visikol from a chemical used in laboratories to an artistic tool that can bring biology to life. Because Visikol was targeted towards academic researchers, it has been inaccessible to hobbyists and artists. While Visikol has become widely used for research, they have not yet had the opportunity to make it available to artists or hobbyists. Funding of this project will allow them to optimize the TaxiClear process so they can produce these amazing specimens at a price that everyone can afford. Currently, they buy small quantities of chemicals and this makes the process too expensive and too difficult for them to create these specimens in large quantities. In addition to being beautiful pieces of art, these specimens, can be a great resource for your classroom or conversation pieces for your desk.
As of May 6th, this project has raised around $1,222 of their $5,000 goal. This project only has 30 days left to raise the $5,000 or it will not be funded! For a pledge of $25, you will get a Aluminum Brushed Photo (3 Options Available – Plant, Insect, Animal). For a pledge of $50, you will get the Whole Body Anole – Stained with Alcian – 8 Dram Vial (25 ml): These specimens are their personal favorite product as they look like fluorescent dragons.
