Good News Fridays: Daniel The Beagle In The Rose Parade

Geek Alabama Good News Fridays

Daniel the beagle has had a rough life in Alabama.  When the dog was about 6 months old, he was set to be euthanized in Florence Alabama on October 3, 2011 along with 17 other dogs, but instead emerged frightened and unscathed from the chamber that was filled with carbon monoxide to put down animals.  The other animals were sadly killed in the chamber.  Now, Daniel is about to do something cool!

Daniel is one of eight shelter dogs who will be riding on a parade float sponsored by the Lucy Pet Foundation, which runs mobile spay, neuter and adoption clinics throughout the U.S.  Daniel will perform a “high five to keep pets alive” trick.  As you know, the Rose Parade is the famous New Year’s Day parade where everything is organic.  The parade is broadcast on numerous networks with HGTV broadcasting the parade commercial free!

Daniel’s story has prompted 31 states to pass bans on gas chambers and other  inhumane forms of euthanasia.  Sadly, states in the southeast like Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky and Texas have not passed laws protecting shelter animals.  And, Alabama could do a better job with animal welfare, that is where AVRAL, or the Alabama Voters For Responsible Animal Legislation comes in!  They are in the middle of a fundraising campaign to get ready for the 2014 Alabama Legislative Session.  They need to raise $8,000 for this session.  To help them with the goal, go to:  http://www.alabamavotesforanimals.org/donate.php

So where is Daniel today?  The dog went to New Jersey, courtesy of Eleventh Hour Rescue.  The group is dedicated to saving pooches from death row in high-kill shelters.  On November 10, 2011, the dog arrived at his forever home with The Dwyers.  Since then, he has been happy playing with the other dogs and the other family members!  To learn more about Daniel The Beagle and his story, go to: http://www.danielthebeagle.com/.
