My Review of SpongeBob, You’re Fired

SpongeBob SquarePants has been cranking out new episodes since 1999.  And the show still brings us some very unique episodes.  Last night, Nickelodeon aired a special 30 minute episode called “SpongeBob You’re Fired.”  And this episode has some very unique characteristics to my own unemployment streak.  I am going to talk about this episode and compare the episode to my own jobless streak.  Let’s get started!

SpongeBob SquarePants is working at the Krusty Krab and everything is going well.  He cooks well and cleans well, all while Squidward is sleeping on the job.  Ah, the memories of my last job where I was a great worker and everything was going fine.  Then in the episode, everything comes crashing down, just like what happened to me!  Mr. Krabs calls SpongeBob to the side and tells him, you’re fired.  I liked how they used all the terms for telling someone you’re fired like getting a pink slip, getting the ax, and being canned.  In my situation, I was called in by an attorney with a camera and tape recorder recording everything.  A few days later, I was fired.

In the episode, SpongeBob cried so much it caused everything in the restaurant to start floating.  Soon, SpongeBob was carted outside and this caused Squidward to celebrate!  He even told SpongeBob to come back, as a customer.  SpongeBob comes back home depresses, Gary tries to cheer up SpongeBob but it does not work.  In my situation, after I was fired, I felt depressed but I also felt relieved.  I was not working for up to 16 hours a day for little pay.  And I got on unemployment insurance until it ran out a year later.

Patrick comes by to tell SpongeBob to start living the fun-employment life.  And boy, does SpongeBob look so bad!  Living the fun-employment life means standing around and being lazy, sleeping in the middle of the day, and the best part, eating free food that you have no idea what it is.  Yep, Patrick and another guy eats some unknown food that causes big issues like Patrick getting a smaller Patrick on the top of his head.  Sandy stops SpongeBob from eating this unknown substance and tells SpongeBob to get back to job searching.  In my situation, I have been on the never-ending job search going to 14 job fairs and applying to over 450 jobs, nothing has happened!  But I still don’t give up and keep doing my media work.

SpongeBob gets jobs at four different restaurants including a hot dog place, a taco place, a pizza place, and a noodle place.  But SpongeBob takes all the food items and turns them into burgers.  Of course, he gets fired from all of his recent jobs.  In my situation, I have done 13 past jobs across America, and in all jobs, I was either fired, laid off, or it was a temp job.  So I feel how SpongeBob keeps getting put down after being fired from job after job.  I have been in the same situation.  But I kept on looking for that next job and structure in life.

After SpongeBob gets fired from those other jobs.  Something weird happens, the owners from the other jobs he was fired from kidnap him, and force him to work at his will.  He was chained up to the hot dog place, he was handcuffed with a breadstick and forced to go work at the pizza place.  Then the taco place and noodle place fight for SpongeBob as well.  All four restaurants are fighting for SpongeBob until a Krabby Patty superhero comes in to fight off the other four restaurant owners and takes SpongeBob back to the Krusty Krab.  It was revealed that Squidward was in the superhero suit and Mr. Krabs wants SpongeBob to come back to work because he can’t cook and all the customers are leaving.  SpongeBob celebrates and is happy he is back to his own job.  And to make up for losing money, Mr. Krabs installs a pay toilet.  Overall, a good ending to the episode.

After the episode, I spent some time reflecting on my own job search.  Yes, I am still searching for my 14th job in over seven years.  And just like in this special  SpongeBob SquarePants episode, I wish someone would come swooping down and actually hire me for a job I can do right for once.  So I hope I can be hired again soon, just like SpongeBob SquarePants.  If this episode taught anything, it’s to not give up and keep looking, something will eventually come up.  And I will continue to write on Geek Alabama hoping something will come up soon.  If you know of something which will mean I can get hired, view my visual resume and video below!  And contact me at [email protected].
