Animation Talk Stuff

Animation Monday: Littlest Pet Shop

Geek Alabama Animation

Now back to our regularly scheduled posts!  Hasbro and The Hub can not rely on ponies forever for ratings and toy sales.  In the 1990’s, the Littlest Pet Shop toy line was launched and there was an animated series that did not last very long.  In the 2000’s, the toy line was redone and the latest animated series was released in 2012.  Although the toys look nice and I am sure little girls love getting them, I am here to talk about the animated series.

1The Littlest Pet Shop animated series premiered in late 2012 on The Hub.  Conveniently placed after My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.  The series starts Blythe Baxter (voiced by Ashleigh Ball) who is an aspiring fashion designer.  Blythe and her dad moves to Downtown City to an apartment above the Littlest Pet Shop.  Blythe’s dad Roger Baxter (voiced by Michael Kopsa) is an airline pilot and helps her daughter when she needs it.  The owner of the Littlest Pet Shop is Anna Twombly (voiced by Kathleen Barr), she befriends Blythe and together they saved the Littlest Pet Shop from closing.

When Blythe moves to the new apartment, she discovers the talent that she can talk to animals.  This is a huge help to save the shop from closing.  Blythe also attends a new school and makes some new friends who assist her on the adventures around the Littlest Pet Shop.  The enemies or bullies are the Biskit twins.  Whittany and Brittany Biskit (voiced by Shannon Chan-Kent) are rich people and they like to act that way by being bullies to many people including Blythe.  Their father owns the Largest Ever Pet Shop, the unfriendly competitor of the Littlest Pet Shop.  Although, I wonder if the Biskit twins just act like bullies to keep their status.  They could easily get along with Blythe.

What I like about this show is Hasbro has allowed some musicians to create some stuff for this show.  In this clip below, Daniel Ingram created a Beatles tribute song.

Here’s another song that is so 1980’s.

This show also has plenty of Easter Eggs and geeky vibes.  The pets parodied Star Trek.

pet-1They also parodied the classic movie Braveheart.

The show has been renewed for season 2 and will premiere sometime this Winter along with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.  With only two episodes left for season one, I am interested to see Blythe’s relationship with her dad, her friends, and the pets.  The season one finale will be a tough one as Blythe gets accepted into the junior program at a fashion school, will she leave or stay?  I also wonder if the Biskit twins will ever become better people.  You know, sometimes having all the money in the world is not a good thing.  This show also pays tribute to small businesses versus those big box stores.  Folks, always shop at a small business, you never know what you might find!

Littlest Pet Shop airs new episodes on Saturdays at 10:30 am central on The Hub.  The season finale will be on April 27th.  I encourage you to watch a few episodes, I think you will like it.
